I remember seeing on Reddit a guy saying he thought every pop culture portrayal of an engaged pacifist as a chilled out dude who just doesn't get upset was the opposite of real life. Real engaged folks are, as you say so evocatively, vibrating with rage all the time and barely containing it.

Just officially cancelled my TFC season seats. Been a SSH since 2012. Been a good run. Will still go to the occasional game, but probably not in winter! It's funny that the league seems to think they are in the business of player acquisition, but it's really entertainment. And freezing my ass off...

watching a regular season game against (insert random team here) isn't really entertaining. I know that southern teams have to deal with the heat, and fair enough! But maybe the answer isn't having a single league across a giant ass continent with the different climates and all. I don't know.

I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

A beauty of a thread.

Westerns & the Old West@davidlambertart.bsky.social

One of the lesser known outlaws of the Old West was Rufus Nephew, aka Climax Jim. That's unfortunate because the man's life was a never ending series of crimes, arrests, acquittals, convictions & daring escapes. Here's a sampling of some of his very stupid adventures... 🧵

The election of our discontent, final column. Hardest one to wrote. Had to rewrite it from scratch to get the argument clear. City elections are a catch-all for angst that isn’t directed to the place where change can actually happen. It’s a kind of dysfunction. I hope you’ll read & share it.

It would be grand, then, if the Government of Canada would terminate any use of X/Twitter. And don't say, "Oh, we need it to get our messages out," because then you are "caught in a situation where we are reliant on one provider."

Mark Carney on what Elon Musk's throttling of Starlink means for Canada: "We do not want to be caught in a situation where we are reliant on one provider that puts Canadians at risk or compromises our sovereignty, our ability to express our values and live our values."

SILVER FOR CANADA 🇨🇦 The Canadian wheelchair curling team captured silver at the Stirling Wheelchair Curling International. This was a different lineup from the Paralympic gold winning team. Still a very high level of curling from this foursome.

As a non-american, can someone please explain what it means to "voluntarily" recognise a union? Isn't it like if they are formed properly that they are binding? I'm confused.

And it really does seem to me that beyond any magic beans, the key to success is fundamental, simple, and obvious: 1. Understand your product and its audience 2. Nurture and empower your team 3. Profit

Holy shit this is a great quote. I keep losing hope because of all the stupidity around me. ("Getting rid of bike lanes speeds traffic up!") I have to become more of a hero, and strive for better!

recalling that the actual quote from Max Weber about "slow boring" is 180 degrees away from limp dishrag centrism. he explicitly says you have to be a hero who reaches for the impossible

Instead, policymakers enacted temporary tax cuts under Bush, made them permanent under Obama, enacted temporary tax cuts under Trump 1, and then made them permanent/enacted new temporary tax cuts under Trump 2. If we hadn’t cut taxes, debt would be lower and stable.

Brads commute to/from city hall is mostly on protected cycling infrastructure. As for having a plan, that's the responsibility of the transportation divisions cycling unit and the professionals who work there, not the mayor. Ravine MUTs cost at least 10x more per 100m than building on-road infra.

Matt Elliott@graphicmatt.com

"Look, nobody rides more bikes than I do. I rode 10,000 kilometres last year," brags Bradford. He says he's "the only candidate that has a plan to build new cycling infrastructure — we're just going to do it in our ravine network."

Ramaswamy has produced an attack ad weaponizing the rape of his opponent, Amy Acton, when she was 12 years old. It features Acton’s mother, who abandoned Acton after she was raped by her step-father, fleeing the state with her husband. Here is the corporate money helping fund that ad.

In my university days studying physics, a couple of guys from a younger cohort had a confrontation in the open study (read: loud basement) room in the engineering library. "Obviously you don't know a thing about differential calculus" Shoves were had, it almost came to blows. Hilarious.
