You ever seen a ring so clearly photoshopped smooth and think "yeah, show this at the convention"? Apparently someone has. And apparently someone thinks photoshop art theft man is still trustworthy enough to do business with. Shameful.

From what I read they decided to move forward with a temp image and Dan hadn't submitted the final (which hasn't been posted to compare as far as I know).

It seems there may have been some cognitive issues occurring at the time according to his agent. The "he did the right thing once he understood" gives me the impression he's slipping and some days he's there and some days he's not. Pure conjecture and could just be their way of explaining it away.

"Use of her work" = 'Plagiarism we profit from' "None of this was intentional" = 'We know WE'RE lazy but this'll hurt our sales numbers' "Credit both Dan and Marta" = 'We might need Dan to push more SL's later' "We are all humans who make mistakes" = 'Forget about it and keep giving us your money'

It's almost like the fact you have been rushing out a trillion sets a year has dramatically lowered the quality and severely over taxed your employees. Stop.

Every new card and every new art per year is additional burden on the playtesting team, artists, and design teams. The number of new cards per year has absolutely massively increased. But also, we don't know the actual circumstances of this yet, and it's nuts to say it's not related to crunch.

Not really. We changed two big sets a la lotr and baldurs gate and a master set (that usually has new art anyway) for 3 small standard legal sets We have more standard sets but the same amount of sets overall, with a similar number of commander precons too

Not remotely the same thing. Yugioh sets are comparatively tiny, half of the sets are reprint sets, and lets be honest, the art is not nearly as complicated or detailed most of the time. Pokemon too, anime style art is cool but it is just not the same magnitude of difficulty.

Sorry, WotC - I don't believe you. You had 19 hours to spin a response to Dan's agent letting the cat out of the bag on FB that you wouldn't accept Dan's art, and substituted this and slapped his name on it. So you forced Dan to nuke his rep and fall on the sword for you. Which is more likely?

The ring doesn't even look painted. It doesn't match any style he's painted in previously. Hopefully Mark is able to share more at some point down the road. Something strange going on in the background here.

I'm seeing a distinct lack of a statement from Marta here. What's her stance? Right now this looks like another case of a guy stealing the credit for a woman's work and being protected / not being punished for it. Paintovers are what you do to learn, to study and improve, not for commercial work.

It's almost like you're doing way too much way too fast and things like this slip through the cracks because you're QA checks and balances are stretched way too thin. Oh, if only millions of people around the world had been screaming about this for two years.

that doesn't make any sense, it doesn't look like his style at all. the ring looks all blurry and digital, while all his other card art is sharp and clearly analog.

This hobbit set was all digital work. Dan is 81 years old. There is no conspiracy here. He could have worked harder and faster in his normal mediums but wasn't allowed to per contract. This is honestly normal business stuff with freelancers. Corpo has ruled and deadlines. Freelancers make it work.

yeah, seems it was the sad old age explanation. who in their right mind thought it was a good idea to have an 80 year old non-digital artist make something digitally?

The 81 year artist who took the comission and the art directors who trust and respect him as they have built a working relationship over 35 years It's the same reason they didn't review it as they normally did, they respected and trusted a coworker of 3 decades. It's called being a human being...

I'm not saying Dan should get a pass and I'm not saying WOTC isn't capable of doing their due diligence of checking their products. All I'm saying is that it sounds like there is a LOT of spinning plates and that there are going to keep being cracks at this pace of production I'm just disappointed

Am I supposed to assume a Magic artist of 30 years drew a reprint of one of the most coveted cards in years without looking at previous printings *at all*, googled the one ring and found this exact rendition without seeing it's a Magic card, and copied it PERCISELY with the inscription smudged off.

i think you're looking at parts that seem like a stretch from dan's statement ('painted over', 'used as reference') and ascribing that to shadiness from WotC while also pouring in parts you invented? like, no one said "without seeing it's a Magic card" and "without looking at previous printings"

and without that I don't think there's anything particularly occam's razor-defying about "hey dan, have you had time to do those revisions" -> receives plagiarized work -> "ok great!" by a person who is checking a treadmill of other artists that day, especially if he has 30 years of goodwill

I am pulling from WotC's take of "none of this was intentional" and "Dan made a mistake". I don't see a world where one would actively know it's a Magic card and somehow unintentionally or mistakenly copy it.

Hold on- he then submitted the exact copy of an art you technically have on file, by an artist both he and you supposedly follow closely, and no one noticed it's an exact copy of - again - one of the most coveted cards in the modern game which this is the reprint of? And no one batted an eye?

Like, do you have any idea how many things had to go wrong for the scenario to happen? That's not even a rookie mistake, that's lightning striking this card 5 times this week.

His agent mentioned going back and forth with Wizards on this piece. I wonder what his first attempts looked like. I wonder what pushed him in this direction. Maybe they sent him Marta’s art as a reference.

Is it possible this was altered after submission and Dan, due to his age, didn't even look to see what the final version was that is being shared? I cannot imagine him painting a near identical version of this using just an online reference image. Something isn't right with this story.

Here's what I'm thinking: You guys kept badgering Dan and when he finally had enough and left, you got some intern to trace this and credited Dan. Now you're making him take the heat for it Btw, im screenshotting this so if you delete it or whatever I got receipts.

Dan is in the wrong here, absolutely. I would also ask that wotc review internal policies that played a role in Dan feeling the necessity to do this, and how things like this could be caught in the future faster.

This entire statement is dancing on a fine line between dubious insincerity and flat-out lying to your customers, Marta, and yourselves. I'd say more, but bsky's character limit is only 300, which isn't nearly enough to convey my immense disappointment with both dan and wotc's choices on the matter.

This should be the most blatant example imaginable to slow down how many sets we get in a year. Quality control should have caught this way before print, but now we have art theft being printed into the one Universes Beyond set people were looking forward to this year. Do better, all of you.

And how about posting actual alt text rather than “a photo of a message”? All-caps white on black is very hard to read for many people.

I think a lot of people (me included) are mad for valid reasons but we should maybe take a pause, see what happens in the next day or two and actually see if we can understand what happened here

So this is bullshit right? You’re telling me a MTG artist who’s been painting jewelry on marble backgrounds for 30 years did a mirrored photoshop job of another magic card and handed it in into WotC? More likely you’re leaning on an artist to bail you out when you plagiarized your own cards.

Not a mistake. I've been doing digital art long enough that the tools and knowledge needed to pull this off meant it was intentional plagiarism. bsky.app/profile/komp...

This was not "I found a reference and tried to replicate it using my own art skills" This was "I literally copied Marta's work, flipped and clone tooled it, and stuck it on a background I found on Pixabay" NO YOU DIDN'T MAKE THE BACKGROUND EITHER. It's just a stock image of "Paint Swirl Texture"

Yeah, references are normal and an important part of creating art. This looks like it is the reference though and should never have gone into print as a final.

If you compared closely enough, this obviously isn't even painted over, this is just photoshoped. Like this looks like this might have been used as a reference/concept proof. If he had actually painted over, would not have been ideal or original, but it in the end it is just a golden ring.

If he had actually "painted over it" (especially in oil) it would definitely look different, recreating these details would have been harder than just doing it in his own style. And in that case it would have been heavily referenced artwork but not plagiarism/copied like this is.

Any artist worth their salt who 'grabs an image from the internet' would AT SOME POINT think to themselves 'hmm, I should make sure it's ok to use this in my art, I should check the license for usage' But to crop, flip, apply a burn filter and clone tool over EXISTING MtG art? Bro. WHAT.

If I get this version from my box topper I will rip it in half. I'm picking up a bundle one. Not gonna sell it because I stand on prinicple for this. I will post a reply of proof.

the set doesnt come out for months, reprint them with different art. its not just the plagiarization, its simply a horrible piece of art. the ring looks poorly cut-and-pasted onto an entirely different piece of art. its just floating there with no consistency in its color palette or lighting. yuck

You're a slanderous liar. Terese and Seb are farther away from being Nazis than you are. If Dan Frazier stole art, he's 10x worse of artist for MtG than both of them combined. There is NOTHING an artist can do professionally as an artist that is worse than stealing someone else's work. Fire him!

Replace the digital art online. Tell me she okayed having her name put on the taken art. Tell me it's not like: we stole your art, they caught us, here is some money. Dude need a suspension... years worth.
