There's nothing to "join" in the Democratic Party. It's a brand with products I spend my vote on once a year at the democracy store. Most people's experience of it is an endless stream of texts that read like scams, their reward for donating or signing a petition. No wonder DSA is growing

Why has DSA grown? One argument from this research: not just ideology, but organization. Strong membership plus ongoing and continuous participation in social movements creates credibility, committed volunteers, political skills, and durable electoral capacity. www.niskanencenter.org/inside-the-d...

They can waive the dues if you can't afford it. Also a lot of the more general meetings and events are free to attend

They are structurally different. The DSA is not a political party and its membership dues work more like a union's membership dues. The Democratic Party cannot charge to register as a Democrat, though it does depend on donations for its party functions.

You support the organization and you get to vote on things. In our local meetings, you get dibs on asking questions of candidates. It's not a union in terms of those kinds of benefits but the structure of it being composed of members who vote on the direction.

You're talking about two different things. You're claiming "I can just say I'm a Democrat!" You can just say you're a Dem-Soc too, many do. You absolutely have to pay dues and be elected to be part of the DNC. Which is the actual, correct comparison to what you're saying.

So are the meetings of your local Democratic Party Legislative District. Really!!! Small yearly fee to join ($20-$25) which can also be waived if you can’t afford it. There are lots of meetings. They are boring. But there is no shortage of meetings and free events to attend.
