i would like to have a lot fewer high-breathlessness low-details confessional letters/essays/tweets/resignations from big ai and a lot more specificity & transparency

Daniel Selsam, an OpenAI researcher, said that "merely pacing the frontier more carefully will not adequately limit the long-term risk." https://bit.ly/4dwR4xx

"Broke ranks", jfc. Tech and business coverage of AI swings through the algorithms like a wrecking ball of idiocy, concussing everyone in its path. They're ALL saying this! The CEOs of the biggest companies in AI have been openly doing the "p-doom" bullshit for like half-a-decade.

i don't like that i feel like we're all getting dragged against our will into an all-media all-the-time LessWrong thread, an insanely annoying and disorienting experience that most people do not have sufficient experience or mental preparations to deal with

But gamergate was Epstein class purposefully generated too--we've learned. Or ought have but seems what are learning in and from Epstein files not actually filtrating through Epstein class owned and controlled media and social media either so color me not surprised after all

My mom AND my grandmother both brought up existential AI risk in my phone calls with them. This is not the world they are supposed to live in!

I feel like there is a Nietzschean “he who fights with monsters” dynamic going on with some of the people who think a lot about rogue AI. Not in the way they act, but how they talk, which is eerily reminiscent of the style of agents’ chat logs from the cybersecurity incidents

For real. Watched a DW news segment yesterday & felt so annoyed to see the host credulously take interviewees at their word, just freely giving the claims of motivated CEOs more oxygen. Rare sight to see most YouTube commenters knowing better & taking DW to task for a lack of critical journalism.

The segment was asking "why now?" regarding the seemingly sudden pivot to call for a pause in AI development. Those they interviewed gave all the usual talking points that echo the reasons about danger Amodei gives, with zero discussion about regulatory capture, running out of funds, etc.

It probably would've merged with the new athiests and died out. Being arrogant enough to think you can scientifically disprove religious belief is well worn territory. Trying to shoehorn that same ideology into a fantasy novel about child magicians is kinda new. Still ended up at eugenics, though.

I tried to put my thoughts into that visually here: bsky.app/profile/thea... I feel like they’re using “extinction” as shorthand for “really bad” but words have meanings

Some AI researchers put the chance that AI kills everyone within ten years above 10%. Taken literally, that means extinction in 1,000 of 10,000 comparable futures I built a model that breaks that claim into steps. Change any assumption, debate your results. paradox.alpacasoft.dev

yes i really dont like the whole spooky rumor mill reply-tweet rhetorical culture of the industry and hangers-on (esp because speculation blends so easily into description)--the HF reports, even treated w/ skepticism, were extremely valuable partly because they were focused & mostly transparent

I'm kind of torn between the tiresomeness of silicon valley types, but also the insufferable bluesky 'I'm oh so much more sophisticated than the tech bros' in this thread. Not a hint of introspection or willingness to engage with this seriously!
