As a reminder, when Trump says he is putting massive tariffs on China, or any nation, that means he is putting a massive tax on YOU. China doesn't pay a single penny. You, the consumer, do.

When Trump claims the U.S. will receive $1 trillion in revenue from tariffs, that is not money coming from other countries. That is $1 trillion is coming out of YOUR pocket.

True .. sort of. If they sell a widget for $100, and now a tariff makes it $110….then yes the $10 comes from the consumer. But…the demand for $110 widget is less than demand for $100 widgets… so, if they want to sell the same amount of widgets…they need to eat the costs…. It gets complicated quick

which is why it doesnt go from a 100 dollar widget to a 110 dollar widget. it goes to a 140 dollar widget to make up for the drop in demand from the added tariff cost.

Other countries do not pay tariffs. The US companies bringing in merchandise pay the tariffs at the point of entry to the Treasury. Those companies in turn add this extra cost to the price of products which we the consumers end up paying.

And it's a regressive "consumption tax" (larger % paid by poor) not the progressive "income tax" (rich pay fair share for the USA) bsky.app/profile/phys...

The laws of physics will be enforced@physicsanddata.bsky.social

Also: tax the corps at a higher rate; nothing wrong with the federal budget that would not be fixed by 38% corp tax. All the focus on "spending" is distraction. The problem is *Revenue*! So of course, the GOP wants to kill the IRS.

Do you think the MAGA will understand that even if they get a sliver of the tax cuts, they’re just effectively getting their own money back? I doubt it. Faux news will spin it as a gift from the great orange god.

Huh? That's not true... The US will get incresed revenue from these tarrifs, but it will also increase prices for consumers. Additionally, Trump will ruin industries, like big agro again, and have to bail them out. Inflation will also increase as supply receeds.

Actually when we place a tariffs on a country when the item gets to port in the USA we charge the company in the usa that is importing it pays the the tariffs and then that company passes the cost to the customers. The country that exports it to us does not pay the tariffs we do

The list of everyday discretionary and required items Americans import from China is immense & Trump just doubled the cost for all of us. If we were like him, granted absolute immunity to do whatever we please & awash in $billions flowing to us daily, we wouldn’t care about the tariffs either.

The buyer is responsible for paying tariffs. Tariffs are a tax on imported goods, typically paid by the person or company that imported them. Many importers pass these costs down to consumers by charging higher prices. (source: Export Development Canada, paraphrased for brevity.)

"Trump's eating the stocks, he's eating the bonds" China’s flexing—dumping Treasuries raises our borrowing costs, rattles markets, and chips away at dollar dominance. It’s financial warfare lite. Trump's gorging on what he can while China burns the rest.

Trump’s $9T trade war started with an Amazon search. Kushner found Death By China, a book quoting a fake expert. That click became U.S. trade policy. My latest PLAINTXT//DECODED breaks down how algorithmic visibility + propaganda = global chaos.

Biden‘s economy was great, people watch too much right wing television, Joe Manchin, and Kirsten Sinema could’ve made it so much better and remember the Republicans said no to everything Trump destroyed everything to help Putin 10,000 soldiers will be moved in eastern Europe to help Putin

It hurts American citizens, but also the other country, by making it harder for them to sell their products to America. Retaliating to the tariffs is not a cost-free exercise of course. You can't expect other countries to just roll over, especially if Trump's justification is insane.

It's a trade war policy, we pay the cost of the war, for a policy trying to incentivize companies to not import from the targeted country. The other country will respond to incentivize their companies to trade elsewhere, but make policy to actually trade elsewhere to lessen cost on citizens.

Plus, Trump isn’t in a trade war with China - he’s helping China. Trump is leading a war against America, breaking up western alliances. Making Taiwan available to China and helping China to become the champion of 3rd world nations. He’s helping Putin accomplish his Eurasian goals.

I don't understand how the American people don't understand tariffs. I think because the Republicans want to cut education and keep the American people stupid. Look at what is happening around the country with the weather issues. They aren't there the Republicans

Yes we know Meidas, not looking forward to any of these high costs when we live on limited budget cause we are retired. Not taking a vacation this year and growing our own vegetables, making my own milk. Wish I could raise chickens but I dont have the backyard space!

Even a hotelier can understand this. Local hospitality taxes are not absorbed by the hotel out of the goodness of their heart. They are a line on your bill “sorry you to have you pay this, not our fault though” Sure, the city/state get revenue. Because the hotel guests pay it.

Trump is a fool. If China embarked on a mass sale of its US treasuries, the value of the debt would plunge and yields would soar. This would drive up US government borrowing costs and hammer the public finances in a highly destabilising move.

So when you buy a pair of Nike shoes, a lot goes to Nike, a lot goes to some over hyped 'athlete' who promotes it, a lot goes to the government and 2c goes to the Chinese 12 year old who made it. Fair and reasonable 👍

True. I know of a small business owner who told customers in a "live" FB that they had already taken delivery of some of their Christmas 25 inventory - to avoid tariffs. You better believe that if small business owners have to pay tariffs they will have no choice but to pass them along to customers.

If a product gets to expansive to be sold the manifacturing and export of the product doesn't make sense which means it comes to a halt. More comes to halt bigger is the impact on the economy. This is a problem for the companies producing outside the US.

Senate bipartisan efforts to oppose tariffs are noble. But, seemingly DOA at House. IMHO, they should draw from All the President's Men, and "follow the money." Who in the House & Senate, and elsewhere stand to collect ill-gotten gains from gross public losses? Journalist heroism might follow.

Now, maybe knowing that in advance, you try to bargain-down the price: "Gee, can't you knock a few bucks off? Tariffs are tough these days, and we've been friends for a while, right?" But still the tax *on you*, the American, even if you get a pity-discount.

You Voted for it , you got Republicans and Trump. NOW you got Higher Prices across the Board, retirement 401k, Stock Market all losing Trillions of Dollars. and a Trump Tariff consumer Tax on Everything you Buy on Everyone .

So many idiots out there are so fucking stupid, they believe the tariffs are helping them and their money is going to blossom into fortune. They have succeeded in dumbing down MAGAT’s to Imbeciles.

Absolutely true. But the Trumpophiles don’t understand this at all and believe everything their God (FOTUS) tells them. This will be a hard barrier for the good guys to overcome

Omg Churchill is still right! America will choose every goddam wrong choice before choosing the right one! Wtf america is isolating again, which pushed on ww1 and ww2. As usa had to get in to finish those wars, it's going to have to go in again to end ww3. History repeating itself!

It gets even more 🤦when you consider that some of the stuff that just doesn't get bought (because USicans can't afford it any more) creates a 'glut' that the producers will still want to sell on the global market. And that pushes those prices down.

Money Explained - with no agenda other than explaining money so more people understand it! bsky.app/profile/mich...

You as in importer. And by the time the consumer gets it, the cost is even higher. Or the importer goes bankrupt first, or the distributor, or the small business trying to sell plastic crap for the price of gold.

Also, there's nothing to stop American producers from raising their own prices to one penny less than the heavily-tariffed Chinese version. It's still cheaper, but all prices go up. Welcome to trumpanomics, you will be paying more.

We can say it, We can read it, We can preach it, But, they won’t believe it. The stove is hot, No it’s not, The paint is wet, Wanna bet? Trump says, “You’ll be rich” They say, “I’m rich!” This life is a bitch.

Simple trade. Unfortunately, the tariffs that he decided to place on other countries is significantly higher than the previously existing tariffs. We also have a lot of tariffs on other countries.

Noting that his “chart” had nothing at all to do with the tariffs other countries have on the US, but was a measure of amounts imported vs exported. And anyone where the calculated trade deficit was less than 20% of total imports still got hit with a 10% tariff, inc when a surplus.

They are wrong to call them "reciprocal" tariffs. They are proportional tariffs. 0% tariffs on both sides would also be proportional. Let's hope these other governments are willing to eliminate their tariffs on us.

They will literally be wiped off the map when China is producing an identical copy. They won't have to cheapen it or change it in any way, because they have changed that law. GOES INTO EFFECT MAY 1. ENJOY YOUR YOUR $600 YPHONE16😆 Check mate cheeto

Me, the small business owner, who got told at 11am today that the order I placed yesterday was oh hold because it would cost me 34% more because of a tariff..... and now..... 104%. I WOULD HAVE TO PAY THAT, not China. Small businesses like mine are hurting right now. Chaos sucks.

After his greedy tariff war, I'm wondering if there will be any companies left to develop and expand in the U.S.!? Other countries will have less insentive to let U.S. companies operate abroad.

Exactly. The regime cult can't even process this. The most logical argument to them is: if countries had to pay it, they would simply stop trading with us and seek other, more affordable options. Countries are not obligated to pay anything to us. That's on us if we want their stuff.

The problem is that key words are missing. "the president is putting massive tariffs on... 🗣️ 🗣️ 🗣️ [EVERY AMERICAN BUSINESS WHICH IMPORTS FROM] ... china"

I guess I’m imagining a nefarious scenario by the current administration. The majority of us paying the higher prices as consumers, will be left with less. Trump’s friends could receive the benefits through tax breaks and government contracts.

The ripple effects are complex. For example, auto parts are imported. If auto insurance companies pay more to fix damaged cars, chances are, they will be passing on the cost increase to you via higher insurance rates.
