Missouri voters have overwhelmingly rejected Amendment 5, the GOP-backed plan to phase out the state income tax and replace it with higher sales taxes

born & raised missouri girl (now living in IL) - from josh hawley to eric schmitt, there is nothing but criminality coming from that state. gone are the days of mccaskill, eagleton, carnahan, etc. ps: why pay state taxes when you already receive $3B more in federal taxes than you pay in???

No one has logically been able to explained to me how MO gets away with overturning bills that are voted on and passed. It really is remarkable. Not sure how other states conduct such things

Turns out voters prefer progressive taxes over a regressive patch that bricks the poor’s spending power. Guess they read the EULA.

This is a tough one for me. As an Oregonian I live in one of two states that don’t have sales tax (NJ). Honestly, I’d happily trade my 9.9% personal income tax for a sales tax and be taxed on what I consume instead of right off the top. Visitors love the free ride here…especially neighbor states.

Montana also charges sales tax on out of state buyers for big purchases. Or they used to anyway. I bought a PS4 in MT as a Wyoming resident years ago and got ID'd and charged sales tax.

Wait…so they’d collect and pass the tax to their neighbor state? That’s generous of them. I’d implement that tomorrow for Washington. Tired of watching it daily. Yes, I’m a crotchety old man 🤣

I think it was a flat "non resident tax" or something. Purchases over so many dollars get charged a flat rate for non residents. So only montata residents really benefited.

Interesting! Didn’t know that about Montana. Oregon doesn’t ID anyone ever. Well… because we’d have no tax to gain. You should see the waves of Washingtonians at border Costcos. I’d do the same if I’m honest. Saves them a fortune. They have ZERO income tax 🤦🏻‍♂️

This is the argument happening in FL right now. However, the state is not brandishing it this way. They are screaming own your home by getting rid of taxes. Nothing is advising how local rates will increase. Commissioners are advising no problem, while internal folks are worried they wont have a job

Yeah. I’m super fuckin’ selfish like that and a complete asshole. Have a great day 👊🏼 Income tax in Oregon hits EVERYONE exactly the same…regardless of income. It’s not progressive and the worst example of a tax imo. At least with sales tax you can mildly control your consumption via choice.

We also get taxed via every utility bill and other services like cell phones and internet. Again. All “necessary” services. Our property taxes are ridiculous…don’t get me started on that.

> Income tax in Oregon hits EVERYONE exactly the same…regardless of income. It’s not progressive WTF? No: Oregon state income tax is absolutely progressive, it has four different brackets rising from ~5 to ~10%, that's a rather different "hit" for different people.

Anything that gets delivered to Oregon soil is tax free. My relatives used to exploit that loophole for Xmas presents. Anything purchased at Amazon from anywhere else in the U.S., but delivered to Oregon…tax free. It’s weird.

You drubbed 'em! Now don't get mad get even. The next ballot initiative should be to abolish the sales tax for an excess earnings tax. You have the votes and it will be damn fun to watch them spontaneously combust.

missouri is a welfare state - taking $3B more every year than they pay to federal taxes - despite having 2 economic 'engines' in stl & kc rural mo schools are going to 4day weeks, hospitals are closing & the state legislature continues to override multiple ballot issues that voters voted for

A victory because it won’t be a state constitutional amendment. But the legislature could still repeal the income tax. We need to remember that when we vote in November!!

I’m proud to say my parents were actively educating all voters about what the amendment would actually do to regular people; especially small business owners.

Literally passed the most comprehensive abortion protections in the nation and voted in an entire state full of reps dedicated to preventing it from taking effect and repealing it on the same ballot It's maddening

do we try? the same ones voting for progressive policies vote red down the ticket. folks don’t seem to understand the relationship there….

Being a lifetime Missourian I was pleasantly surprised that people showed up with their voice. Now will the GOP try to reword it or try to circumvent the vote with some shady shit.

Are They Stupid... All People Would Do Is Go Shopping In Other States To Avoid The Sales Tax Altogether. Many People Already Have To Do It Now For Sin-Tax-Fees (Tobacco/Alcohol, 100% In Some States.) That Aren't Even Legal.

I have to pay sales tax in Montana as a Wyoming resident. Every time I've made a significant purchase in Montana, I get ID'd and charged sales tax. Smokes, booze, groceries, stuff like that is insignificant.

The wording was very vague. Allowed the legislators to tax anything at any rate. Most in Missouri pay about 5% in income tax. Projected sales taxes were 20% on Everything including child care, rent and Healthcare and regularly taxed items. This was going to cost MO

#30million8/30 Why is it that the most obvious thing to do is the least likely thing to happen? The nation will move in the direction we take it. We possess all of the power. STOP READING THE HEADLINES! RISE UP! OVERTHROW! END FASCISM IN AMERICA!

At this point, the question isn't what Trump will say next, it's how much nonsense people are willing to tolerate. The chaos, insults, and constant obsession have become impossible to ignore.

Just like MO voters won 2overturn the abortion law 2 yrs ago, R's who had control in MO for 20+ yrs, decided 2go against the will of the voters & take it 2court. Thankfully, the R state judges decided against the Republicans & their tactics. Same could happen with amendment 4 & 5.

Florida trying to push this getting rid of property tax like its a good thing. People in Florida too stupid to understand property tax goes to your local government that is why the GOP wants it gone so they can hold control of all the money and force their agendas on blue cities.

Florida should drop property taxes on the poorest of us and make up for it on the wealthy end. Thank god I have a Habitat for Humanity home/mortgage, zero property tax. Not sure if that stands in perpetuity or only until the mortgage is paid.

It depends what and how you tax. In countries that can’t easily collect taxes, it’s imperative to have sales taxes. You don't tax the necessities, but you collect on the kind of things that poor people can’t afford anyway.

UNLESS like in my state (sales tax, no income tax) you exempt Food, Medical care and rent; which make up about 90% or more of what the poorest of citizens spend their few dollars on. I know. I was born in WA State in 1961, and spent my life here. I was poor as could be most of it.

Seems like a good idea to me, pay tax on what you buy, not what you have. How do other states with this system like it? - Texas for example.
