Harsh news indeed, for those of us in harsher climes haven’t even gotten our tomato plants in the ground yet because of frost. 32 degrees here last night. We’ll be getting the tomato sandwiches in late July if we’re lucky.

Colbert mentioned this on his final episode version of the Colbert questionnaire and I’ve been meaning to try it. It’s not something we Minnesotans ever shared when I was growing up but it sounds awesome.

I'm so envious. I have one tiny cherry tomato so far. 8 plants of various types. It's so cool here I've had my heat on. PNW

My dear friend Big Bob McLean loved big ripe tomatoes. This was our last lunch, at the Roaring Fordies in Angaston. As you might see, the tomatoes were dribblingly delicious! Then, knowing it was coming, Big Bob went off to hospital and died.

I have been waiting for 16 months to start picking this crop of avocado on my five year-old tree. When I planted it, I had no idea that it took that long to mature on the tree. They are delicious. Such a luxury next year‘s cropped is already forming and won’t be ready again until next summer.

Yum. My aunt Elfreide was from Westphalia Germany. She would make tomato sandwiches on bread buttered thickly with unsalted butter. No mayonnaise. Tomatoes from her garden, salt and pepper and thin slices of white onion. It was amazing.

My Cherokee Purple is almost ready for the first tomato sandwich this season. But it still won't match the thick, fantastically juicy slice of Pink Brandywine later in the season; simply with mayo, salt and pepper. mmmmmmm

Now THAT is the color of a real tomato! Red all the way through. Not the pinkish white crunchy disk they serve on burgers. We wont have them here for awhile. But around the end of July its tomatoes green beans and corn on the cob everyday!

We lived in the country when I was young, and our babysitter lived right across the street from us. They had huge cornfields. Every day, Mary would send us 10 kids she babysat out to the cornfield to pick our ear of corn for lunch. Literally corn row to kitchen! Can’t get any fresher than that!

When it's tomato season my wife and I have cucumber and tomato sandwiches EVERY day until there are no more cukes; then we have tomato sandwiches. We are still planting tomatoes in Maine.

Just picked our first homegrown garden tomato of the summer! Waiting for my wife to get home from work so we can quarter it up and savor that first glorious taste of the season! Canned green beans this weekend, and need to pick again already.

In the late sixties we lived in Coalinga CA and my Dad would take us to cull tomatoes. I remember eating them on the back porch juice dripping, a slight tang from whatever they were dusted with. Heaven! That fresh tomato smell. Nothing like it.

I’m not much of a gardener but I grew tomatoes one year just so I could do this. Store bought weren’t doing it for me and the taste of the home grown took me back to my childhood. So simple but so good.
