will stancil is engaging with the Nuclear Discourse Button. i of course said this almost a year ago, and this website was absolutely _not_ ready for the take back then. let's see how it goes now. i think he is right though. gleefully using the word "clanker" makes you a bad person, imo.

The slur “clanker” is a bit like playing a video game that lets you plan and execute a school shooting. Unlike the real thing no actual human is harmed; the damage is instead inflicted on YOU, the person explicitly indulging in a weird fantasy of doing something terrible.

It is to some extent ok to make gentle fun of pets and inanimate objects: they don't understand, they don't get insulted. But when it's done from a place of hatred and loathing, we are practicing hatred and loathing, which harms us.

You’re both right: tech sucks AND the “catharsis therapy” of punching pillows & screaming is Bad Advice, as doing so actively shortens the neural path/distance between impulse & action. I don’t use slurs at tech, but I do yell at it and nobody likes that because they feel they’re witnessing abuse.
