LD participants messaged him several times over the years, offering to help out. On some level I can understand his decision to keep it his baby, and he really did keep the community together. Of course the trade off is that there is a bus factor of 1

He should give it over to a community group to run (but who?), and/or move it to itch.io so there's less work to do. Pros/cons?

Moving to itch where it's one of many events would kill anything that makes it special. Personally I think it would be awesome if stewardship could pass around in the community, with an option of Mike coming back when he's ready. @ramiismail.com would be a good candidate to start off with I think
