Death of the Author: Despite the creators intentions, the thing that truly matters about a piece of work is how the viewer connects with it
Death of the Audience: Holy shit why are there alligators in the theater?!?! someone please help they have my leg oh god oh fu-
Here is what folks had never understood: the work belongs to the author untill is out there, and then it belong to the audience; not after for the author, not before for the audience
You could create a Death of the Audience school of thought for works that became popular with a different target audience than what was intended. First example I can think of is My Little Pony.
Oh, I’ve been practicing that for a time now.
The entire audience of a certain wizard franchise has been dead to me since the last game’s drama.
It’s liberating, and not just as an author.
did you mean for this to start Discourse or was this just a silly pun
either way I think the amount of good in the world went up a little bit because of it
Man as a public health scientist I cannot tell you how much it kills me (and others!) that people have unironically started "death of the author"ing actual scientific research. This pushback couldn't be happening at a better time
My favorite is when people say "their research conclusion contradicts what I, a layperson, observes in my day to day life so it must be wrong" like hey I kind of think that's the point...?
Protip: Every time you viscerally hate an audience and wish horrible things on them, you are on some level committing a quantum murder spree.
Get all the fun with none of the run!
