Water is becoming a major issue in the Southern California fires. As crews battled the wildfire in Pacific Palisades, they put so much strain on the water system that the fire hydrants ran dry. The fires have also fed ash into the water supply, leading to a boil order notice.

Also, if fire melted the plastic water pipes that supply water, and those areas backflush into the rest of the system, the water can be extremely toxic as a result - one of the northern Cali fires discovered this a few years back.

I feel like this is inevitable. Some places in the world have to go without clean water for short periods of time. LA is almost (or is?) a desert. And climate change makes all the problems worse. But no leaders will prioritize working to fight and prepare for climate change.

In 1993, I was a FF during the Laguna Beach fire. I struggled to open a fire hydrant only to follow and a vaccum. As soon as I wrestled the cap off, it began sucking air into the system. There's no water system in the world that is capable of keeping up with this kind of demand.

Brilliant idea. I don't think you've thought it through, but it's brilliant. Corrosive water running through a completely separate water network just for fires. Did I mention it's corrosive? What are you going to make the pipes out of?

Thank you for all you do to assist Ukraine at this critical time.we can't thank you more but accept my appreciate , you guys are doing a lot to show the world how evil Russia are,a state compromise of terrorist, I'm Ukrainian and my English isn't good

This is what happens when a country embrace the evil of the economic neoliberalism... Important infrastructure is never made or maintain because it is not profitable enough for the privatised greed...! If at least Americans knew how a real democracy and a really developed nation would work...? 😒

It is possible to overdraw a main line. It does not matter how much water is in a reservoir if you can’t get it to the hydrants. Most city main lines are “only” four inch so at 200 psi there’s “only” about 700 GPM. CalFire’s spec is 200 GPM per hydrant

It’s poor journalism. It’s not a major issue. This was a devastating natural disaster that displaced 30,000 people & required nonstop firefighting by 9K firefighters using urban equipment for a wildfire without air support. Instead of placing blame we should be applauding the efforts of those heroes

Because it’s an attempt to slur the city during a natural disaster. A surprise considering it’s coming from PBS. There’ll be time to discuss what could improve during similar future disasters. But pushing this narrative as if it could have changed anything does a disservice to those suffering.

This is very poor journalism. No: there's plenty of water to put out fires. We're next to an ocean! And the "boil water" order is ONLY in the Pacific Palisades area. Meanwhile valiant firefighters including from Canada have worked to knock back the other fires. Report on that, NPR.

Caruso’s team of “private” firefighters drew from the same water source - which at times ran dry - that desperate “public” firefighters were using to try to save the public. And Caruso dares to criticize Mayor Bass for being on a business trip when the fires started? #californiafires #wildfire

Firefighters & the entire team does an extraordinary job under horrendous conditions! I applaud everyone, well except Mayor Karen Bass. What the hell is she doing attending an inauguration in Ghana? Taxpayers U R paying 4 this while she cuts LAFD funding by $17.6 M this year. WTF is wrong with her?

Want more water available? Stop growing almonds. 1 nut takes 1 gallon of water to grow. 2,500 square miles are used to grow almonds. Or 960 million gallons of water for 1 sq mi of almond trees.

NPR joke of a rpt..firefighters on the scenes confirmed hydrants have water but using all the hydrants in the county at the same is affecting water pressure..I believe the firefighters fighting the fires over some water plant hack sharing this reporters chaos 4 clicks agenda..NPR has no credibility

LA fires and cancelled home insurance policies: If the wildfires were that predictable, they are not a Force Majeure situation. Instead, there should have been clear warnings and preparations. What reports and forecasts were the insurance cancellations based on?

Hello, expert fire understander James Woods here, and let me tell you how you're wrong. I learned about fire when I took up freebasing crack (in a movie) and had to use fire to heat up the crack for smoking, as a crack smoker does. This taught me how easy fire is to put out, you turn on the sink and

They don't drop water on houses from helicopters, they need hoses and hydrants to do that. The helicopters can't fly in the 70mph winds or in the smoke. They can take it out of people's swimming pools and just about every house there has ones. My husband works for a helicopter firefighting team.

This has nothing to do with whether that part of California is a desert or not (it's not). It's a transportation problem. There's plenty of water, but the pumps designed to carry that water don't have the capacity to keep up with what's being drawn.

This has absolutely nothing to do with ground water levels. The fire hydrant system isn't run off of ground water lol, it's run off the municipal infrastructure which has always gotten most of its water from lake reservoirs, which are actually very full right now.

Normally this wouldn't be an issue because there's about 3 million gallons of water in local storage tanks earmarked specifically for firefighting, but firefighters have used up that supply.

The billioners will hoard all the wealth either we let them or not. For now we have no solution for that except to tax them. Unfortunetly we don't succeed this time to have a Government by the people and for the people so that's on hold for now.

Insurance companies cut fire insurance in LA a few weeks ago because many of these corrupt insurance companies have access to super computers & government data that are able to forecast disasters many weeks ahead of the general public. Every aspect of American life corrupted is by evil & evil.

Yep have designed several water systems and usually is a peak fire flow for something like 2 hours. Different scenarios have to be considered but just to give you an idea of the time frames involved.

I don’t usually hear Egypt as an example, but people often reference Israel when talking about Desal. And Israel reduced per person water consumption by half of what Californians use and recycled 100% of their wastewater before moving to Desal. It was their last resort.

Desal is the most expensive and most climate impacting water resource. Even worse than current imports. Wastewater recycling and stormwater capture have been proven to be more cost effective, have a lower carbon footprint and can meet our demand.

As a retired firefighter, it never fails to amaze me how few people understand the simple hydraulics of a water reticulation system. It can only deliver so much water at any given time; open all the hydrants for a fire like this and you very quickly drain the system.

Putting mega cities in an ecological environment that can't support it was always going to lead to this. The Colorado once reached the ocean. The Baja peninsula used to be a lush, important environment. Californians killed it all.

Fire chief explained that there’s plenty of water, due to the demand, the system lost (water) pressure and couldn’t pump the water. Aerial water drops were grounded due to >70 mph winds. Wind subsided currently and helps up and dumping Thank you CalFire, Forestry and all firefighters, stay safe💙💕

Australia has desal; the south west region of Western Australia in particular, being as it’s the the fastest drying corner of the planet. Hasn’t solved their groundwater issue but then that’s what happens when private bores & mass clearing is allowed unchecked

Why ? Because of the pressure required to pump water uphill , these pumps can only handle so much volume. Perhaps , more reservoirs are needed in the hills ? This not normal three years of drought , way behind rainfall totals .

They’re next. Reports are coming in that many jews were seen running through the palisades holding torches after Pelosi was spotted. LGBTQ was out there with gasoline tanks and the illegals were taking jobs away from fire department as they fought the fire leaving many of them unemployed.

Water is not fungible. The only way to make sure that the hydrants are full, like our incoming tyrant is demanding, is to conserve water. No more swimming pools and more importantly, no more green grass. No more golf courses. No more agriculture which demands more values than the calories it grows

I don’t think that was the issue. All tanks were full, but had been drained quickly because of the frantic draw. They didn’t allow time to refill. Rather like not allowing the toilet tank to fill again before flushing repeatedly.

The big one here is NO MORE WATER DEMANDING AGRICULTURE. No more almonds, no more pomegranates, no more alfalfa. Industry uses MORE water than all human consumption by a big margin. We SHOULD all be mad this is the case.

If you’re younger than sixty, you have a good chance of witnessing the radical destabilization of life on earth—massive crop failures, apocalyptic fires, imploding economies, epic flooding, hundreds of millions of refugees fleeing regions made uninhabitable by extreme heat or permanent drought.

Public safety trumps the billionaire who "owns" the rights to most of the water in California. F*ck the Resnicks and heir Wonderful brand. I will never buy from them.

Northern California. Southern California has been having record dry spells broken by record flooding and hurricanes. Steady rainfall that keeps aquifers full is what we need. Instead, we get a bunch of new growth all at once that becomes kindling 6 months later.
