Stop turning oligarchy into a horse race. Deeply slanted pro-billionaire bullshit. NPR could do better, but will always do this, instead, because management is captured by the donor class.

What if they do? Won't CA's people be better off? They can go suck the life out of another state and feel the wrath there. I sure do miss a time, long and long ago when gazillionaires gave a shit about something other than making more $...

Actually, I don't think they ever did care. The ones that set up philanthropic funds mostly did so only to prevent having it be taxed. It was only accidental that those funds helped other less fortunate people.

They won’t. They didn’t leave Massachusetts when we passed Fair Share. They just threaten to leave so you don’t make them pay their fair share of taxes.

Democracy doesn't work when a few people have enough money to buy elections, politicians, and even competing businesses. It just doesn't.

The mega-rich don't want to pay taxes because its unfair? They have restructured their income so income taxes don't apply and now they cry a tax on their billions of dollars of assets isn't fair? Why don't they suggest a fair tax - and it isn't "billionaires don't pay". Be a patriot pay your share.

Until they see how shitty the infrastructure and weather is in all the idiot states of America. They're money can't make AL or MS any less shitty of a dank swamp to live in.

It won't. We've seen this over and over again with real estate taxes, wealth taxes, etc globally. Open questions like this are the height of stupidity. The rich won't give up their lifestyles and friends no matter what happens at the local level. Full stop.

No, just like every time the rich bitch about something in California. We're all waiting for them to abandon the state and it keeps not happening for some reason

I'm not entirely surprised that npr doesn't realize this, but billionaires are actually bad for the economy. The money they steal doesn't reenter the economy the way it would if it was being earned by workers. It's hoarded.

A person working a minimum wage job does more for the economy than any billionaire could because the money they earn is spent. As a Californian, my only problem with this is it's incredibly inadequate in attempts to reverse the harm caused by billionaires.

No. They will not leave the state. They will just pay lawmakers to grant them better tax shelters to hide their income to avoid paying the taxes. They are only rich when it impresses people. They are poor when they have to help.

Will billionaires leave California if wealth tax passes? Yes. Will billionaires leave California if wealth tax doesn't pass? Also yes. Because there is a possibility that California will try again. And no one believes this would be "one time".

No. It's time we do more. Billionaires must pay their fair share or move elsewhere if their candy asses don't like it. How much money do you really need feeding your ego? How much money can you spend? You have enough for a thousand lifetimes. Dudes! You're gonna die anyway, like everyone else.

Why is NPR simping for billionaires? It was already pathetic seeing the two-sided fascism articles and now this! NPR has really fallen off since it realized it had to dance in hopes of getting any money and couldn’t just do good journalism anymore

Why would the economy suffer? In the 1950s, the top tax rate was 90%, and that era produced the biggest economic expansion in, well, ever. Admittedly, my knowledge of history only goes back to late antiquity, but I can’t think of anything like it in the past 1000 years. Let’s try that again.

"Will the state's economy suffer if extraordinarily rich people are required to participate in civil society at a level commensurate with their unfathomably lavish wealth?" Give me a fucking break. They profit off our backs; time to pay up or GTFO.
