The massive magnitude of today’s selloff in Brazilian assets is less about Brazil’s underlying outlook and more about just how confident—and wrong—the consensus view on finance was with respect to a Bolsonaro win. #brazil #lula #bolsonaro

After already exploiting her estranged, evil mother for cheap political points, this tape removes all doubt about who he is. When politicians show utter contempt for survivors, they reveal how they view everyone they wish to rule. Reducing survival to “complaining” is vile even for him.

You Can See Everything is an amazing and unsettling masterpiece. While this thread is essentially plot spoiler free, DO NOT READ if you haven't seen the film.

Yes, there is some "ambiguity" at times. It's strategically placed into the film precisely to give the viewer freedom to interpret what they are seeing and feeling which creates this experience of being manipulated while watching the film.

It is a masterclass showing in the most visceral sense how Holmes plays people. It's far more effective and interesting than any directly explanatory takedown of her actions would be.

Some have said that the movie goes soft on Holmes or, even, that it raises doubts about her as a master-level manipulator. That is not at all what is happening. Nathan is not trying to be a documentarian, he's a character in this film.

Over the course of the movie we witness Holmes manipulation of Nathan. She is so effective that she seems to turn our narrator at times. The film feels unsettling because you are also realizing, at some level, that Holmes is actively trying to manipulate you the viewer - and possibly succeeding.

Meta took down the No Kings organizing page today - the biggest day of protest this fall. They provided zero explanation. It stayed down for the entire afternoon until most of the protests were done. Outrageous. Put this on the January investigation list.

As we try to restore access to the No Kings instagram today, this is what I am thinking about.

❗❗❗Mark Zuckerberg's meta just suspended the No Kings Instagram account. I just rushed back from my local No Kings to jump on this. Bottom line, would be helpful for all pro-No Kings folks to elevate the issue and help us get the word out about No Kings today. The Nerd Reich strikes again.

An important thing to note in this period of fascism is that fascists are historically not good at government. Their entire shtick is "oh yeah? Well that's so-and-so's fault." Actual governance requires you to have a solution that is not "well let's fuck those marginalized guys up."

Trump is on Putin’s side. Always has been. Trump is actively helping Putin kill Ukrainian men, women, and children. Donald Trump is a traitor and should be treated as such.👇

Slavery was and is a real thing that has brutalized hundreds of millions of people over the course of human history, if someone tells me a fucking chatbot is enslaved I'm immediately throwing hands. It's not cute, it's not intriguing, it's an insult to real people who suffered and suffer now.

James Talarico just summed up the entire midterm election in one sentence: “We have an affordability crisis because we have a corruption crisis.” That’s it. This entire election comes down to affordability vs. corruption. Which one are you voting for?

Two points I want to make about this: 1. Democrats should immediately threaten to deport Elon Musk and Melania Trump for *actual* immigration fraud once they retake power. Don't @ me about how we're not like them. Do politics. Make the threat. Force Republicans to react and defend their decision.

Stupid people not thinking through the details. No doubt racism is playing a big role, but many also don't have a good concept of the past. Probably without exception, everyone reading this is living an objectively better life than the most wealthy or powerful 1% of 1939.

Ukraine took out 2 huge data centers, and just like that--POOF! Pro-Trump/MAGA posts on US social media plummeted. Same happened to posts boosting Germany's far-right AfD. The primary function of those Bots is to boost groups Putin believes will destabilize the west. #USDemocracy #Voices4Victory

tomshardware.comRussia's Yandex bot traffic nearly eliminated overnight after Ukraine drone strikes cripple multiple of 'Russia's Google' data centers — Ukraine intensifies bombing of Yandex data centers in response ...The world is getting a break from Russian bots thanks to Kyiv.

This is such an absolutely damning graphic. So much of the discourse online is simply Russian espionage aimed at destroying the democratic world order. Musk is absolutely in cahoots with this as X relies on that traffic to appear relevant.

Ossoff is one of the very few people adequately channeling Evelyn Normielib these days the base doesn't want to hear entreaties to our better natures, they don't want to go high while the other side goes low, they want someone to come on the TV and go "these people are garbage" he's good at it

Bill McKibben@billmckibben.bsky.social

Figuring out why Ossoff is so effective is an interesting task. I think he's mastering a kind of stern dignity that is uniquely compelling in contrast to the clownish cruelty of the other side. I think the other person who's kind of hit on the same thing is AOC, though in a different register

(and that is what so many college students seem to have lost track of: the part where college is the most elite and expensive brain gym ever invented, and somehow now they think that watching videos of bench presses is the same as doing bench presses)

A very important read. Both in the specifics of what these 5 women had to endure and as an indication of the unscrupulous tools and tactics that oligarchs, businesses, and the Trump WH have at their disposal to try to control the public narrative.

I think you start by impeaching someone whom GOPers hate, like Whiskey Pete. See how that goes in the Senate. Given THEM someone to scapegoat for losing their majorities.

It’s batshit to me that the far left think they can win national, statewide, or even local races across this country w/out building a coalition that includes moderates. I’m a progressive. But I know calling moderates names doesn’t win them over, it just shrinks your coalition.

Beautiful! Plus, you can bet Trump will just be fuming for a full week if he learns this.
