Starmer being able to lay out his own departure timetable (potentially over months!) is silly. You don't give a PM a farewell tour, you do the numbers over the weekend, roll him at 10am, and tell the voters he's gone to live on a nice farm in the country. You amateurs. You absolute toddlers.

Hell, even our most fascist-adjacent state premier tried to lay out a timetable for leaving (declaring in October 1986 "I will resign on the eighth of the eighth, eighty-eight") and didn't make it to Christmas.

He'll even get to award "resignation honours" ffs! THIS is your idea of rolling a PM? You don't all sign the card and chip in for a spa day voucher, you airbrush the guy out like Yezhov next to Stalin!

It’s not possible to do it cleanly in these days of rank and file members getting a vote for the new leader. You’d have Lucy Powell appointed as PM until they can conduct a mail in ballot to select a new leader (and thus PM)

Parliamentary parties should be able to roll a leader and install a new one in a single swift move, and this applies as much to Labor adopting rank-and-file ballots as it does to the Poms taking forever about it

There’s something beautiful in the way we do it. It’s like an Attenborough documentary where a sick hartebeest limps down to the water and then is rent in twain simultaneously by both a cheetah and a crocodile.

“And we had to sit still and take it. It was among the Terrigals. It was real NSW Right shit. They even stacked his branch so his mother couldn't vote him.”
