The most fundamental political debate of our time: You are integrated into and have responsibility for our complex, imperfect society vs. Nuh-uh.

I think the one silver lining to all of this is that politics has evolved from a few months of discussion every 2/4 years in cycles to an all-the-time thing. I think that in and of itself is a step in the right direction, because I think cyclic politics got us in this mess in the first place.

That's a good point. We can hope the outcome of all of this is increased civic engagement. We'll stop bowling alone and start attending town meetings and the like.

No, the most fundamental question we need to answer is whether we want to - and can - live in a civilized society. The fact that there's any doubt in your mind about who won in 2020 indicates that we aren't living in a civilized society.

Not who won in 2020, who WAS SERVING AS PRESIDENT IN 2020. Republicans blame Biden for COVID, for BLM protest response, for a supposedly botched census, ans a thousand other things that happened while Donald Felon Trump was in the White House.

I think the most fundamental debate of our time concerns the role of _process_ as a check against individual human failures and frailties. "Due process" in all its forms is the only way I know of to compensate for individual irresponsibility.
