I hope Mamdani clarifies whether NYPD support for this action was at his direction or if the NYPD acted on its own; if the latter, why do they have that latitude and what is being done to reign in a rogue agency?

last night eyewitnesses saw Oscar Belgal — the man shot by ICE with his 5 year old in the car — discharged from the hospital into ICE custody, with feds speeding off as NYPD cleared the roads for them of protesters. his attorneys don't know where he is; he's seemingly been taken out of NY state.

The NYPD is effectively a sovereign paramilitary. Hopefully Mamdani is able to do something to change that but it's going to take a lot more than just usual mayor things.

Ukraine had to go through "lustrations" process after revolution of dignity to cleanse police that was subservient to regime and not the people: - fired everyone; - banned most of the leadership; - prioritized non-cops when rehiring; - thoroughly vetted past cops when if they were re-hired

I visited and worked in a dozen of very corrupt countries. I only had to pay bribes in NY, to the NYPD, repeatedly. Ask any film crew; they’ll have stories to share.

If it is the latter, it should provide Mamdani with enough political cover to clean house and start reforming the police department (I know I’m a Pollyanna but it’d be nice to see).

There's a compelling case to be made that you effectively cannot regain control of the NYPD (or indeed any major metro police department that is clearly happy to operate as a conservative paramilitary first and civil service never) without a strong Democratic President willing to back your play IMO

NYC cops are notorious for not enforcing the law when there's a Liberal Mayor in NYC.... Mostly nuisance crimes that piss people off... And then the NY Post runs headlines about how the city is becoming crime infested... And then tourists stop coming.. Mamdani has avoided that so far
