Many rural counties don't have emergency plans period. How many of those areas are left without internet to this day? The terrain in Appalachia is a challenge for companies to install it. I wouldn't be surprised if many people in "the back-woods" were still using land-line phones.

I live in western NC! many folks were given a day or less of advance warning to prepare, which led to much of the loss. and much mainstream news was not giving them the serious warning they needed, so people assumed "hey we're in the mountains, what could happen?" and then... well...

I live elsewhere, but saw the hurricane tracks and flood forecasts *several days* before. I called friends and family in NC, they already knew. Similar inland hurricane impacts hit Vermont a couple years ago. That said, there's only so much prep you can do for floods and the devastation is real.

exactly, we don't even have proper prep for slightly larger amounts of snow lol. the warnings were kinda downplayed, even I heard that it "couldn't be that bad" until less than a day before when it changed to "uh....." lol. we knew it would hit, but were sandbagging for a bad thunderstorm basically.

long story short, there is still much destruction to clean up and there will be for a while still because we aren't getting outside help anymore. but I mainly want the takeaway to be that we were failed and people died and/or lost everything.

Buncombe county represent! I remember the Duke trucks staging in anticipation. I also remember getting regular alerts saying “We expect this to meet 2004 levels” and then “we expect this to exceed 2004 levels” and then “we expect this to exceed 1916 levels” and at that point it’s just “.. well shit”

The forecasts were accurate. You had access to them. You literally had what you were asking for. You can't say there was no warning and be correct.

I do actually believe we were given proper warning. Reading NWS alert in hindsight is just as bone-chilling to me as Katrina, and now I've been through both. I was panicked, my native coworkers were calm. Just was no precedent for this. No media mentions the 2 days of unrelated rain BEFORE Helene!

I'm in NC. People were absolutely warned through every form of media. Scientists were explaining mudslides on TV. I tried to convince friends in McDowell, Mitchell, Buncombe, Henderson, and Haywood counties how bad it would be. It was reminiscent of trying to get people to take covid seriously.

As this article says, some people are so self-reliant and mistrusting of government, that it wouldn’t matter whether evacuation orders were given. Storms are getting worse. In FL, where many ride out hurricanes, people were defenseless against surges of 5-15 feet, as happened with Ian in 2022.

The consensus among everyone I talked to here is we don't get hurricanes. We did not know how bad it could be. OMG everyone just wants to assume we decided not to listen!! That is not true!!!

Y'all don't know those people. Donald Trump could personally stand on the roof of each of their outhouses and yell "Hurricane! Run!" and they'd either just stand there or run into the outhouse. Lesson: You can't reach people who don't believe it could never happen to them.

We just had a major tornado rip through the middle of our city which never happens. And almost another one 3 days later. And this one was at night. And our weather guy who has been here for decades said night storms now are bad because they don’t have enough people working at the NWS at night. 🤬

What's odd to me is that I'm in the PNW. Sure, I have an Env Sci degree, but I saw this coming ~48 hours beforehand. I still don't get why I was the exception. Expected rainfall, topography, watersheds... you really don't need to understand that much. Yet mayors, the governor, news channels...

Perhaps he’s stupid fucking people were watching Fox News to complain about a president that brought us out of a pandemic with no recession to be the most economically powerhouse country The stupidity of our country is on steroids

I remember. Listening to FEMA and NWS, their words were chilling and ominous. Anyone who DEFERS to experts, would’ve known and heeded. Alas, many Americans have chosen to follow populist ideas without factual support, like the vaccine resistance.

have had to rescue them. Now we won’t have FEMA to help despite my husband and I paying nearly $1,000 last Fall for flood insurance. We don’t live in a flood zone but we have ditches, not storm water control. I cannot even look at my neighbors anymore. I am so angry at them, such Christians.

I live in a MAGA county of southeastern coastal North Carolina. When we had mandatory evacuations for Hurricane Florence many Republicans refused to leave. Some who did leave came back during the flooding. They’re were more worried about their property than of the lives of the people who might

We were fortunate enough to be able to afford (credit) a hotel near Raleigh. It flooded there as well. We were ok, just lost a guinea pig which was tormented by moving so much. We paid over $12,000 to have the downed trees removed from our yard. No insurance covers that. Thank you

Nothing's going to reach people now. We are entering a total news and disaster warnings desert period. Ham radio is the best bet for people in prone areas now.

Was it because they were unaware of it due to poor communications or was it because Trump told them to ignore what the government was trying to warn them about?

As a diehard Democrat living in WNC, no, it's because we weren't told. Not everyone here is the nice picture you painted so that you don't have to care about people who aren't exactly like you.

How do you not hear about a hurricane several days out? Yes rain fall amounts can be hard to predict and the amount in that storm was extremely high. Trump spread so much misinformation and lies it cost people their lives.

Look. People need to be alert to weather, traffic and general news. You can provide information and news but people just don’t care. They don’t want to be responsible. Even if alerts were sent out to individual phones, some(many) would not pay attention.

After reading these comments: some of y'all need to take a good look at yourselves and ask if you are really progressives and if you really care about people. I'm done.
