Today in London (10am) the UNEP releases its Emissions Gap Report 2026: The Point of Return They say the chance of holding warming to below 1.5°C with no or limited overshoot is gone. To get on the "lowest possible" scenario pathway (ie 1.7-1.8°C) emissions must fall by ~6.4% annually until 2030.

wwf.panda.orgNature can protect us from climate change ... so why aren't we investing?A new report from WWF and UNEP-WCMC looks at why nature-based climate action remains stuck at the margins — and what it will take to bring it to scale. Women planting mangroves. Photo Credit: Kent Andreasen/WWF-Germany Around the world, people rely on forests, wetlands, and other natural systems to reduce risks to homes, livelihoods, food, and water from floods, drought, and extreme heat. Yet investment in this first line of defence remains far too low. Climate change is making daily life harder and more dangerous for millions of people. Communities on the front line still lack the money they need to prepare, protect their homes and livelihoods, and recover after disasters. This funding gap is also a missed opportunity. Forests, wetlands, rivers, grasslands and coastal habitats already help communities manage climate risks. They hold and filter water, protect soils and help keep temperatures down. They also support wildlife, jobs and local economies. The benefits are clear, but investment has not kept pace. The evidence shows that these approaches can work. However, a new report from WWF and UNEP-WCMC identifies five barriers that repeatedly get in the way. Government action is often poorly coordinated, and many institutions lack the staff and...

meduza.ioWho is Sofya Rozenfeld, the internationally renowned Russian ornithologist sentenced to three and a half years for donating to Alexey Navalny's Anti-Corruption Foundation?Sofya Rozenfeld has spent her life studying Arctic birds: traveling to Russia’s Far North on expeditions, following flocks of geese in a seaplane, and fighting to protect rare species. Now the scientist, one of Russia’s leading ornithologists with a doctorate in biological sciences, has been sentenced to three and a half years in a penal colony for two donations of 1,000 rubles each to the Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK). Rozenfeld admitted guilt in part, saying she had been unable to cancel her recurring payments because she was on an expedition and out of contact. T-invariant examined why she refused to leave Russia, how her trial unfolded, and what Russian science stands to lose with her imprisonment. Meduza is translating the article with minor edits. ‘They put on quite a show’ Sofya Rozenfeld learned of the criminal investigation on December 5, 2025, shortly after returning from Israel, where she had been visiting her father. The 50-year-old scientist was charged with financing an “extremist” organization over two transfers of 1,000 rubles each to the Anti-Corruption Foundation in August and September 2021. “She was here in Israel visiting me. And she went back to Moscow sometime in late November. Literally the next day or...

resilience.org'Inner Degrowth': An engineer on why the energy crisis and our inner emptiness are the same problemMarcos Rupérez Cerqueda spent years as an engineer on green hydrogen projects in Spain, installing electrolysers and fuel cells, before the numbers made him stop believing in a technical fix. His new book, Inner Degrowth: From Energy Collapse to Existential Void, with a foreword by the Spanish physicist Antonio Turiel, follows that path from the energy data to a much more personal question. In this Q&A, he traces this journey and discusses his upcoming book. Starting as a believer in green hydrogen. What changed? I grew up inside the solution. My father is an engineer who chaired an environmental foundation, and we lived in one of the first bioclimatic houses in my region of Spain. So when I chose what to study, it felt obvious: industrial engineering, then a master’s in hydrogen in Denmark. If most of the energy that moves our civilization isn’t electricity, hydrogen looked like the perfect bridge: make it with renewables, store it, move it, use it. Then one afternoon, in front of a spreadsheet with my business partner, I did the full count for one common chain. Around 40% of the energy is lost in the electrolyser, roughly another 10% compressing the hydrogen, and another...

arstechnica.comRIP Margaret Hamilton, whose code saved the Apollo 11 Moon landingMargaret Hamilton, who coined the term “software engineering” and led the development of onboard flight software for NASA’s Apollo program in the 1960s, died last week at the age of 90. A recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016, Hamilton was also immortalized as a LEGO minifig the following year—part of the “Women of NASA” set that also included astronauts Mae Jemison and Sally Ride. “To say Margaret Hamilton was a pioneer—to say she was ahead of her time—would be a dramatic understatement. She was a software engineer at a time when that field was in its infancy, and she not only developed advanced code herself but also led a team in using that nascent technology to develop one of the most complex systems humanity had ever achieved,” said Olivier de Weck, interim head of the MIT Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics. “The Apollo program still stands as one of our greatest testaments to the power of collaboration, ingenuity, and engineering, and Hamilton was a fundamental contributor to that program’s success.” Born in 1936 in Paoli, Indiana, Hamilton graduated from Earlham College in 1958 with a degree in mathematics and a minor in philosophy—the latter a nod to...

Trump officially rolled back fuel efficiency standards today. The new target for 2031 is about 34.5 miles per gallon, down from 50.4. That means more gas burned, more pollution, and more money out of drivers’ pockets. So much for making things affordable.

The "massive weekly grocery haul" is a symptom of car-dependent sprawl, not a universal rule of life. Healthy cities don't force you to drive to a warehouse store. Good design makes grabbing fresh food a quick, passive part of your daily walk or bike commute. These straw men arguments bore me.

Try buying a family's week's worth of groceries and then taking the bus home.

culturalsurvival.orgAirwaves of Resistance: How Indigenous Voices Are Reclaiming Climate Justice on Mt. Elgon, KenyaChanging weather patterns, severe soil erosion, and growing deforestation are putting the fragile Mt. Elgon highland ecosystem under increasing pressure. For the Koony People, the climate crisis is not an abstract global issue. It is a direct threat to their ancestral land, culture, and survival. To respond, the community has turned to a powerful local tool: Indigenous-language community radio. Through interactive broadcasts, residents are making climate information easier to understand and connecting global climate change to their daily lives and traditional conservation practices. For years, climate discussions have been led mostly by scientists and policymakers, often leaving Indigenous communities out. On Mt. Elgon, community radio is helping close that gap by translating climate science into the Koony language. “The presenters explained climate issues in a simple way that made sense to people like us who are not experts,” said Joseph Pkemoi, a resident of Sendera, adding, “I liked that it was interactive. We could ask questions and even share our opinions live on radio.” By using the community’s own language, the broadcasts have built trust and encouraged more people to take part. They have also helped residents see how climate change is affecting their environment and daily lives. “The discussions...
