This fundamentally misunderstands the engineering tradeoffs*and* the value of said usage data. If you're going to blame anything for this, blame ISPs for making self hosting anywhere from hard to impossible.

All of the Internet of Things junk was easy to enable with your own personal server at home. Later, they didn't even need that: they were their own devices with IP addresses and internet access. All you needed was an app to talk to them. But all the companies insisted on logins to THEIR servers.

Most IoT things I look at fall into 2 camps * Why does this device need internet? What do I gain from that? * This device doesn't need to exist at all

This, like most things, is not easily defined in black and white. It's a spectrum. I agree that the people he noted are definitely in the ACTUAL TECHBROS cohort. But I think there are shades of gray that exist within the concept, too.

Jobs wasn't even that great of a CEO. He was a competent and sufficient CEO. He provided a vision and a path forward, like you're supposed to. The only reason everyone fawned over him so much was because most of the CEO class are negligent and incompetent. And they're getting worse.

To be fair, Musk did come up with the Tesla door handles, the ones which freeze shut when it's icy out, forcing owners to piss on them just to get into their car. www.youtube.com/watch?v=HauV... The handles also caused a man to burn to death when rescuers couldn't open the doors of his burning car.
