Nerds are the ones who warned you about cryptocurrency, and NFTs, and the internet of things. Nerds are the ones trying to explain to you that "AI" is just overhyped pattern recognition which we already had for years. Techbros are not nerds. They're predators.

Hell yeah. In the field I currently work in, there's not one day where AI Investors aren't banging at my emails. AI will play a role in the field, perhaps a big role, but 99.5% of those techbros email are as phony as they go. The real work happens in the back, with no VC money, methodically.

The fact that none of them seem to have anything more than the briefest surface-level brush of the "nerd" media they vaguely allude to be fans of and actively work to kill the industries that made said media in favor of personalized flavor pellets... ("something Bladerunner would drive" holy shit)

As a non-techie, the first thing I do when a new tech show horse is being paraded around, is to research nerd explanations and analysis. Helped me a lot to understand how those hype cycles work but also understand concepts that the tech bros never fully explain.

The techbros I've run into seem to be jocks and preppies who can't stand not being cool and influential, so they're mimicking nerds. I'm not sure how we became cool. But imitating us doesn't equal us XD It does, however, trick the general populace into thinking techbros are qualified nerds -.-;

I dunno, I'll cede that a "real nerd" is probably an actually smart, well-read person - but the first person who pops in my head is someone who collects Funko Pops and thinks Marvel is peak cinema, and *that* person I can totally see being into anything vaguely futuristic without a second thought

I'm sorry to say I know quite a few nerds who genuinely buy into new tech fads every time. Let's not pretend they're especially immune to hype and naive tech optimism.

Some have replied to point out that real “nerds” don’t fit cleanly into the pigeon holes you’ve defined. Its also true that people who throw around the word “techbro” don’t always thoughtfully observe the distinctions you’re making. Many of them simply resent people who create technology.

These signs were not directed at execs like Elon Musk. They were put up by “hipsters” who felt that tech people were not interesting enough to be allowed in their cool urban neighborhoods and whose political ideology provided rationalizations for hating them.

Techbros don't create. They appropriate. They find someone else's thing and slap a logo on it. Techbros lie. They cheat. They say anything to convince investors to throw money at them. Techbros don't care about whatever tech they're flogging. It's all just a pretense to trick people out of money.

Techbros are happy for you to think they're the pioneers, the engineers, the inventors and designers. Elon Musk has never designed anything. Sam Altman is a professional investor. Mark Zuckerberg coded a webpage to stalk girls. These are not Jobs or Gates, and even they were thieving assholes.

Techbros are businessmen who learned just enough about technology to trick other people into thinking they could change the world. All they change is the numbers in everyone else's bank account to zero. Nerds create. They fix. They innovate. Techbros weaponize what nerds make.

Jobs wasn't even that great of a CEO. He was a competent and sufficient CEO. He provided a vision and a path forward, like you're supposed to. The only reason everyone fawned over him so much was because most of the CEO class are negligent and incompetent. And they're getting worse.

To be fair, Musk did come up with the Tesla door handles, the ones which freeze shut when it's icy out, forcing owners to piss on them just to get into their car. www.youtube.com/watch?v=HauV... The handles also caused a man to burn to death when rescuers couldn't open the doors of his burning car.

Exactly. Techbros are vacuous venture capitalists, not "nerds." They not the guys who spent endless hours as kids building Radio Shack electronics projects. Gates didn't write DOS. Musk didn't design any electric cars. Elisabeth Holmes didn't design the blood test machine that didn't work.

Thank you for the clarification. The terms shouldn’t be interchangeable. However, in some circumstances I’ll still contend that while a nerd is by no means a techbro, a techbro can certainly be a nerd, too.

Tech bros are marketers with a few nerdy skills, and they think that qualifies them to be called nerds. Tech bros calling themselves nerds is like film studio executives calling themselves “filmmakers”.

they're not even marketers; that suggests they have actual marketing SKILLS they're all just idiots with deep pockets born into a world that has been BUILT to give idiots with deep pockets the benefit of the doubt by default

a guy with ten billion dollars in the bank could go on CNN and declare "the sky is purple and the ocean tastes like daisies" and talking heads would be like "HE RAISES SOME INTERESTING POINTS" statements like "AGI will be achievable in the next few years" are of the same caliber

Revenge of the Nerds gives us both. Anthony Edwards is a nerd who meets another nerd and they create nerdy things together. The other is a predator who commits rape by fraud.

Yeah I'm not into retconning stuff as "oh that wasn't OUR fault" There were plenty of fucking nerds pushing every bad thing you've identified. Source: me, a fucking nerd who had to hear about it from those fucking nerds

Meanwhile, on the #HugosDiscourse portion of my timeline, there’s ANOTHER scandal breaking about an influential nerd who turns out to have been a predator. There’s no meaningful definition of “nerd” that sorts Jedi from Sith. If that’s what folks want, just say it. Everyone knows what it means now.

And there were plenty of nerds pushing back against them too (source, still me) and I agree that the definition of techbro is outside that but if this is our community then we need to own that it is not perfect

“Nerds taking over the world” has very strong overtones of those absolute losers who still seethe about being absolute losers in high school instead of moving on like normal people.

There's a familiar pattern in nerd culture where when a subculture begins to creep into general awareness predators invade and co-opt the space to monetize it. Tech now follows the same pattern, but at a streamlined pace. Some version of the tragedy of the commons.

Yep. I interview a lot of nerds for work, particularly in things like cybersecurity and privacy, and they were really good about banging the warning drum last year. It was the business guys who think they were smart enough to be nerds who are dangerous.

Honestly, the fact that weirdos like this can just openly admit their entire positions hinge on imagining themselves taking some elaborate revenge on the people bullying them, is jarring. Like, it's just a total lack of self-awareness of how that makes them seem

It would be cool to also acknowledge the women, many of them Black and brown, who’ve been sounding the alarm for years, including but not limited to Timnit Gebru, Margaret Mitchell, Joy Buolamwini, Safiya Umoja Noble, Ruha Benjamin, and Virginia Eubanks.

Overhyped by finance people, clearly. A bullshit trend to use AI in every marketing campaign, that's sure. But reducing deep models to a pattern matching algorithm is quite an euphemism, especially regarding their efficiency.
