think I managed to annoy this Detroit bus driver so much with my boundless enthusiasm and several questions that he just let me in for free so I'd go sit and stop engaging with him, so here's a nice cheapskate trick for you there I guess

My simplified BOE monetary policy function staffing structure: 9 people making a decision. 15-20 experienced people they want to discuss that with. Another 300 or so mostly producing the charts and data inputs which can now be vibe coded and hoping to eventually become one of the 15-20.

Saw it. Cinema packed with people of all ages. Lots of laughs: these guys really know what they're doing. Definitely not one of those disappointing TV spin-offs. Ideal half-term fare, I'd say.
Strongly agree. It's not unreasonable of the government to ask grown-ups to give half an hour's thought to what they would want to hand if the power or water went out overnight.

Coffee. The biggest ad campaign of my teenage years seriously suggested that instant coffee was something that sophisticated urbanites offered their neighbours in the hope of getting them into bed.
Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?
What are you stockpiling? Burnham and Badenoch have spent the week taking policies to the tip, but at least Farage is playing in stores of racism. Me for the Guardian...

Ondřej Surý fixed PHP. Open source is completely wild.
70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

There was a whole rabbit hole I fell into years ago about how the British Army going into WW1 were very into the idea of indirect fire by rifles and MGs, and calculated the ballistic trajectories and angles the soldiers would need to fire their rifles in the air to hit the desired spot.

By far the most baffling listener to @warmovietheatre.com is the person who feels moved every so often to tell us why he hates it. Not entirely clear what it was about our episode on The Wild Bunch that prompted this. We did discuss tax evasion. Maybe they just know @duncanweldon.bsky.social.

I think it may be a feature of modern populism? So to be an heir you are either in or out the party. In, you have to take falls for the leader and are shown to be incompetent. Out, you must say increasingly radical things to be relevant that make the mainstream allergic to you.
On both sides of the Atlantic, populist movements get their shelf-life from their leaders. Reform has no heirs to Farage, and no other Republican can pull off Trumpism.
like vance, ramaswamy is a hateful, resentful orc of a human being, and the reason i think this will hurt him politically — where this stuff didn’t hurt trump — is that ramaswamy, like vance, is also profoundly unlikeable. he has no charm or charisma or anything. just a dipshit.

For a while I made Christmas video messages for people (usually as Geoffrey Geoff-Geoffrey) which were a lot of fun and quite popular. For various reasons I haven’t been able to do them for a couple of years but I think I’ll have time this year if anyone is interested? ko-fi.com/mattgreencom...

Danny Kruger's words on Muslims, if you replaced references to Islam with 'international Jewry' or 'the Bishop of Rome', might appear familiar to fans of Western Medieval and modern history
Stony silence for Danny Kruger at a Reform rally as he suggests party could win over UK Muslim voters - as long as they swear 'allegiance to the British state' rather than the 'global Islamic community'
