I will say, if you want an author who has a stronger writing style but does a lot of great hard sci-fi page turner sort of stuff, I have found that Adrian Tchaikovsky rarely lets me down.

It's a primary source, if you're into those. I found it a little weird that she never seemed to bring up the xcheck program where six million users (a whole lot of bigots, many reporters found) were exempted from any moderation of any kind.

I hate these evil-doer-turned-"whistleblowers" who spent a whole career pigging out on the lavish wealth and power associated with doing evil, and then as soon as the wind turns, they denounce cashbox all over again, but by ratting out their former colleagues. share.google/5mlez1Zd5Vj3...

This gross spectacle, similar to the abominable rehabilitation of Liz Cheney, is a well-oiled mechanism designed to allow people to enrich themselves doing evil while innoculating themselves from any possibility of reputational or career damage if ever there is a reckonning. I fucking hate it.

IMO Tchaikovsky is great but he really wears his influences on his sleeve and the 'found family of quirky outcasts saves the universe' stuff from that series felt very cookie cutter. He's at his best when he's working with influences that are less overdone.

Ah... Tchaikovsky the writer. I saw him in a sci-fi conference in France last year discussing the works of Iain Banks, a writer I had never heard of. It took me forever to understand what they meant when they were discussing "the culture".
