“Like it or not, we’re all living in Trump’s world now. This is a book about what happens when a politician knows he can’t win by competing in everyone else’s reality, so he creates his own” - Amanda Carpenter

I think Covid inspires such rage and frantic dissembling because it was a moment when denying social solidarity and the importance of quality government could literally kill you. a lot of conservatives did just that

"wahhhhh I couldn't go to restaurants and there were not-at-all-enforced orders to stay at home for a few months" ok but this could have ended up with your plague-ridden corpse shoveled into a mass grave and burned alongside 50,000 others

I could have done with some of that old time stealing. As I was in a key industry, I worked right through it. I’d much rather sitting around on my arse playing Fallout 4, or reading a book.

To be fair to guys like this, if you accept the premise that a spike in death rates two or three times greater than the one we saw would have led to social collapse and widespread chaos that the security state could not have contained, it does pretty much put a pin in their whole project.

And then they turned "ignoring the social contract" into their whole personality. Soooo much antisocial behavior continues today that I think was triggered by Covid.

I think it’s because the lies and contradictions upon which our system is built were laid bare for all to see and the only people who had an explanation for that other than telling more lies were the gay commie Muslims that no conservative could hear.

Fundamentally, right-wingers do not understand, and fear, the idea of interdependence. They also fundamentally do not understand, and fear, the fact that the world is often ambiguous and does not admit of single, simple answers.

So stark, the difference between current right-wing and the now near-extinct trad conservative. Social contract was a huge part of conservatism. Me, leftist, disagreed on most points about what that contract was or should be but we were aligned that there was one.

I think there is a lot of guilt because so many of them died. They want to blame Fauci or vaccines or Big Pharma rather than accept the fact that if their friends and relatives had been vaccinated they would still be here.
