building a centrally planned economy, but instead of being expertly managed by technocrats working towards the public good, its just ultraconsumerist know-nothings with fear in their hearts.

The number of times I've seen people say that the Democrats ran on only "Orange Man Bad", when that shows me they just didn't pay attention to anything else that was being said.

Cato does suck, so when they can dunk on a chart you know its a shitty chart. The data is from the exact same source as the Murdoch owned Wall Street Journal rag chart you cited.

every time someone tries to say that there's an alternative, it inevitably emerges that one of two things is true: -they're talking about charts but calling it something else -their answer to 'what if subjective experiences differ' is 'listen to the people I like better'

Deprivation is thin soil for socialism. The way to socialism is to make liberalism progressive, equitable, and prosperous

Convincing young people that America is poor & no one can afford anything & everyone is living paycheck to paycheck & their economic future is doomed ... IS NOT GOING TO LEAD TO MORE PROGRESSIVE POLICY. People who feel anxious & under threat do not respond with openness & generosity! Look it up!

You can't run away from what you are. And you have to dance with the one who brought you. For Democrats, this means being liberal and cosmopolitan.

you are allowed to tell me that voting doesn't matter only if you have killed a person for political reasons

So I think the current data center buildout spree is different from what's been going on in the past and people are right to be concerned but also there's too many people that think this

Yes. People don't even think 2008 was that bad. They say "Sure, it was tough, but it's equally tough now, in a different way" which is beyond ridiculous. It's not remotely comparable.

One thing I’ve discovered from discussing your observations is that no-one remembers or believes that the early 1990s recession was actually that bad

There is a certain type of person on here who absolutely does not believe that communication ever requires modulation if that modulation involves facially compromising with your critics. And sometimes I think about the brittleness of that position and get... wistful. Whimsical. Imagining.

Seeing this more and more and torn between: A) Lazy signage = bad cooking? B) I generally associate low quality signage with good non-chain food

Horrors courtesy of my local Korean restaurant. I ordered the bowl of writhing worms and it was actually slices of meat. Sadly in my city, Kyoto, more and more restaurant are using generated images. Why, when they have to make the dish anyway?

Bragging about having "seven nines of uptime" is demonic. It should be 85.7% at the very most. The LORD commanded us to keep the Sabbath holy and having your Web site available during the day of rest is an affront

the robots don't have feelings. it's people finding a socially acceptable way to perform bigotry for fun, which seems bad

There is and it is explicitly how young men are slowly seduced into being more and more racist. It is functionally adopting how the right indoctrinates young men through escalating acts of transgression.

Part of what this discourse is getting at, I think, is that bigotry is, in some respects, fun for the bigot, which means engaging in the patterns of bigotry without targeting actual humans gives you access to a type of fun that's normally socially unacceptable (at least in left-leaning circles).

FWIW: it’s very likely that what’s going on here is a proxy war in defense of a specific academic theory that has been propagated within sociology and other “soft” disciplines in an effort to, in effect, portray the kind of military history Bret does as fundamentally misguided
