I think it is kinda “Taking him seriously”; one of his stated excuses for wanting it is geopolitical security against Russia and China. Well, Denmark is a NATO ally, they’re beefing up security, a rational person using that reasoning would be satisfied. So he can’t use that excuse going forward.

If the US continue as they do now, there is zero incentive for any nation to remain or become an ally. America used to be able to offer more than just force and fear, now it's just another bully.

Reputation wise, the US is already at 1945 Germany level. How much time did it take the Germans to leave their awful past behind and move on? 80 years later, they are still apologizing.

I also wonder if they want to secure the submarine monitors (GIUK) - it certainly helps us keep track of Russian submarines but it might be more important for Europe, and they can no longer trust us enough to leave it undefended. Trump is doing a good job as a Russian asset, less so as a US one.

And those Danish and other European forces being deployed are not going to be in position if Russia tries anything.

This is a deeply racist and sexist country. More so than I think some on the left realize. Trump won in 24 with a coalition of white men, uneducated white women and--out of step with previous elections--Latino men. It remains to be seen whether that latter group is still his, but the other 2? Yup.

I had the thought that a long-term knock off effect of all this may be the world demanding a significant US military disarmament, along side growth in other countries' militaries. The world can't afford for the US to have such an outsized amount of military force anymore.

Even if you vote in a new administration and scrape the tumour clean, the rest of the world is no longer going to trust the US as a stable and reliable state for some time. Allies are going to have to assume this could all happen again and adjust economic and political relationships accordingly.
