To quit writing you actually have to be writing in the first place

The author who published a book about truth and AI that was embarrassingly revealed to have included AI-hallucinated quotes told @wired.com that he'd rather quit writing than quit using AI.

I wrote a travelogue of a recent trip for friends. My GF read it and said the first part sounded like me, then asked if I used AI for the rest. Nah, it was just the first draft. Apparently me spewing words onto the page as quickly as possible reads like a LLM hallucinating a trip to Japan.

Reminds me of what my father said when I was complaining about work, after my first paycheck, and saying I couldn't wait until retirement. "You actually have to work first."

If "writing" is loosely defined as the creation of a product for meeting the functional requirements of a "reader", then it's not unfathomable to see curation and refinement of AI slop as meeting that definition. That might work for some information dump product, but obviously not creative work.

Is typing in vaguely topical prompts going to be the sole basis for determining someone's occupation in the future? Asking ChatGPT about a headache and now you're a doctor? Asking if you should buy OpenAI by asking Grok and now you're a hedgefund?

Me putting down the PS5 controller: I am no longer a South Florida drug pimp. I also also no longer a Special Forces commando. I am no longer an Italian plumber. I am no longer Pac Man.
