Today I found out my company doesn't have a policy for deleted emails. Lmao. Almost 8k in my box 😂😭

one of our clients insists on sending an email to my whole team every time any ticket in our department is updated, but luckily they are easy to filter without missing actual emails from that client I keep my actual inbox clean but the filter folder has a little over 194k unread

We definitely couldn't do that. A lot of stuff that needs years of retention; most of that gets saved to the right places. But folks have to be able to look things up. I would only ever put a retention policy on the deleted items folder.

Almost all of it was junk mailers but also he just apparently never once ever emptied his deleted folder. I’m thinking about adding an Exchange Online retention policy for trash to perma delete anything in that folder older than 2 years. He had stuff from a decade ago in there.

... And then you end up with a litigation hold that has to build out exceptions for "never delete anything this user has received"

Every corporate job I've ever had has involved setting up a filter that sends noisy bullshit automated emails to a separate inbox where I don't care about reading them.

I know someone at a previous place of work that never emptied their trash because "what if they need it later"? Then constantly complained that Outlook was slow to open.
