They didn't want to live in a retirement home. So these women started their own housing collective in Montreal. Maison des RebElles is a chosen family of 22 women – mostly gay, some allies – that's been flourishing for more than 30 years. www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/artic...

They sure are doing better than most married women, who have given & given to ungrateful husbands who don’t care about them. See the wealthy men of the president’s administration. How many spend time doing things with their wives not their mistresses!

I love this! Here in the U.S., an 82-year-old woman lobbied the government of her state to allow "happy hour" social events at her retirement home that didn't require a liquor license. She won and now her retirement home is allowed social events where alcohol is allowed. More power to us seniors!

In my state of WI, you are only allowed a 6-pack per person in our public parks. If there is more than that, a liquor permit is required. While that law is rarely enforced, if you get a crappy cop patrolling the park it can be costly. After the onslaught of drunk drivers, laws were toughened.

There's a house up the road a bit with 5 guys in their 70s & 80s all living together- they pool resources and have a nurse check on them daily, a cook that does meal prep for the week and a cleaning service twice a month. They're awesome, and kinda happier than most.

Many state services offer similar collective home-share assisted living, without having to “prove” anything about who gets accepted in it. If the private sector wants to get in on it, that’s okay, too, just as long as they don’t let it go to their heads.

No, nursing homes are for your grandma with Alzheimer's to be watched at all times. Assisted living is for retiree/disabled to get up and greet the day, so long as there's someone to actually HELP them out of the bed.

Damn! I thought about the distinction and still posted the wrong term. I know better. :( Anyway, I didn't even suspect there were state programs. If I don't take my wife back to the Philippines to retire I'll have a look someday.

This is my future. I want to join one or start one should I become a widow before my husband becomes a widower. Honestly, all generations who can't afford to live as a single unit should consider roommates.

Thirty years is a long time for any group to keep choosing one another. Turns out “community” gets a lot more durable when people actually build systems around it

My friends and I have been talking about doing something like this for years, since most of us never had kids. This gives me hope we might be able to do it!

There was a group in CA that placed seniors who couldn't afford living alone with other seniors who had homes and needed help paying bills. They were screened, background checks, same sex only and strict rules. I don't know if it's still around but it is something every state should start.

This is wonderful! I hate to think what's gonna happen to me if my husband pre-deceases me. I have no family (by choice, trust me) and I'm figuring my story is gonna end in a closed garage with my 58 Cadillac running.
