This is the most intense tsunami footage I've ever seen. It purportedly shows the tsunami from the 29 July Mw 8.8 quake in Kamchatka, Russia, filmed in that same region. Source: seismic.kiwi on TikTok, although I've seen this video all over the internet and may originally be from VK or Telegram.

The video quality is poor, but the constructive and destructive interference patterns in the waveforms are clear. Note how, when two waves constructively interfere, they're capable of driving water tens of metres above the shoreline onto even locally high-standing terrain.

The sound is also dominated by mid-frequencies, but I presume the actual noise here would have been almost deafening. More to the point, this video demonstrates that tsunami aren't "waves" per se, but enormous volumes of displaced seawater seeking equilibrium. At whatever cost to the coast.

Yes, there was a big earthquake off Kamchatka recently, and yes, it caused tsunamis. But how do we know this *particular* video was taken in Kamchatka in the aftermath of the earthquake? And how do we know it shows a tsunami rather than some other kind of wave?

Yikes. At first he seems way high enough to be out of danger, then suddenly he didn’t . I kind of got the vibe of a landslide tsunami in Alaska that I heard about where they can get bigger when they funnel into coves and such.

That looks about right to me. What's truly amazing about this event is what a small tsunami it produced for its magnitude as a thrust quake. If it had been more typical, that guy and his dog would both have likely copped it.

More seriously, I would say that ~ 1 person a year is lost on Ireland's west coast to "a freak wave" - there's a paper to be done linking "freak waves" to Atlantic seismic data. Might even be a bolide or two in the stats!

Good point -- there have been some severe injuries and deaths due to rogue waves. Some places seem to be prone. www.ctvnews.ca/regina/artic... Shoreline topography can play a role -- I noticed that northern CA was still on alert long after the all-clear for the rest of the coast.

The dog and the human reacted exactly as I would expect. Most people and even dogs have seen waves plenty of times. They were quite high on the hill and would have been quite surprised that the water did not behave like normal waves at all. The force behind the this water is significantly higher.

I live by the ocean and year after year I see people injured standing where they shouldn’t be standing during storms, high tides, etc. Do not ever underestimate the power of the ocean, you’ll regret it.
