There is a debate on French Bsky because a left-wing media outlet has announced it is returning to X due to insufficient engagement on Bsky—even though they are barely active on the platform. A quick reminder: unless you are some sort of celebrity, generating engagement takes work. Sorry.

Especially on a social network without an opaque algorithm—you can't really count on "hit tweets" here. You have to create interesting posts, reply to people, interact with other accounts, and avoid looking like a bot. (The "Nazi bar" issue and the reign of bots on X are separate topics.)

It really sucks, especially if you were already a media outlet or mid-sized account before joining Bsky. 20% of my X followers followed me here, and anyone with a reasonably large account had an advantage here right from the start. Crossposting is nice, but you need to be present.

I just pulled up one of my old tweets from X and was met with a flood of tweets from people obsessed with the return of progressives from Bsky, accusing them of antisemitism and pedophilia. On X 🫠 It gives me PTSD of my last months there.

I almost fell for it and replied (accounts with five times fewer followers after six years on X than I have after two years on Bsky claiming there’s no engagement here 🤡). Then I remembered the trap of the X algo and the much-anticipated "debates" that consists of nothing but getting insulted.

And being present also means there's a chance that someone who wasn't previously aware of you might start following. I'm pretty sure I didn't know you existed before joining bsky, for example.

Plus now X is purging old users (like me) because older users are not insane Nazis. So the left wing outlet will get more engagement... of people telling them that the moustache man should have gotten rid of all of them when he was 'saving' (occupying) France.

Yeah it’s kinda sad to see left wing accounts on more right wing centric platforms like X or Facebook get completely dogpiled on because it can be incredibly counterproductive. Even if those running the account don’t get dissuaded from sharing their beliefs the people who agree with them might

That's the thing - the numbers are of little use at the best of times. On Twitter, we KNOW that they are entirely meaningless. This reeks of "we have no idea what we're doing or what we want, but 'number go up' is good, 'number less than before' is bad".

I am not a big account, just a Czech guy who posts about his hobbys: historical sites I’ve seen and photographed on my travels, cars and politics. On Xitter I had double flwr count and way lower reach and interaction count than here since the algorithm went crazy. But you have to invest into it.

On the other hand, at least on Czech BSky I observe decreasing amount of interactions as some ppl are returning the Xitter. Right now i’s still ok but should it continue, I would also consider moving elsewhere. I am just sure that it would not be Xitter as I still remember all bots I had to block…

I have no idea who they are or what they attempted, but it sounds like they are saying low effort Organic engagement has little reach and they have to go back somewhere they can buy it by the pound. A "we tried nothing and they're all out of ideas" perhaps?

Rest assured many of us know😅: but apart from their poor decision, these two "journalists" have mostly outed themselves as very "corruptible", damaging their reputation a lot, which is a much worse thing to happen than to only hit a few "likes". Didn't follow them then, won't be following them now!

This is painful as ALL the space companies use X almost exclusively. As a space artist and rocket nerd, I'm literally cutting myself off from the prime source of news. I could not get away from the nazi crap and eventually I felt like I was being complicit in 'tolerating' it. So I torched my login.

The big platforms all attract the kind of people you really don't want to share a platform with. Nazis, spammers, porn bots, reply guys, incels, Russian trolls, nutters... For me it's a fundamental mistake to treat high volume platforms as a good thing.

Preach! All the people who are saying that Bluesky doesn't have the 'reach' that X does are missing the point. We don't want to come here to get away from the deplorables and then they follow us all here.

Personally I find smaller communities inherently nicer. They feel like a good old fashioned forum, where you frequently interact with the same people. Mastodon seems to have settled into a home for techies and stopped growing, which is fine by me. And BlueSky is great for artist to artist chat.

They are after cash. Sadly a lot of evil people have a lot of cash. That and large numbers. A lot of people can be wrong (see a single individual finding out a health/infection risk and the majority ignoring it and getting ill).

Yeah, a bunch of small-to-medium, semi-hemi-focused communities is way, way better to deal with than the whole "a platform must encompass the entire planet or else it's non-competitive!" mentality. (And makes things inconvenient for the bot hordes, which is always a plus nowadays.)
