EA delenda est, already. Really, any of the big consolidate-and-burn game industry omnicorporations delenda est. Looty private equity delenda est, too, while we're at it. Lotta stuff delenda est, really. It feels like that kind of a day. Where's my salt...?

BREAKING: Electronic Arts is cutting 400 jobs and shutting down BioWare, the legendary development studio behind Dragon Age and Mass Effect. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

I know "make UIs worse at random intervals for no reason so managers and shareholders think we're Innovating(tm)" is one of the tech industry's whole Things, but even by those standards, come on Youtube, what the hell is that.

Dear All Journalists Everwhere: I know the guy's incoherent rants are technically called "truths," but maybe for just five minutes consider not reporting on them as settled facts without at least pretending to do a little legwork first.

Once in awhile, the news fails to suck.

Jesus Christ: after a recent ruling by the Eighth Circuit that allowed Act 372 to take effect, an Arkansas county has banned all children from checking out any books in the adult section, bringing home any DVDs, or using the self-checkout kiosk in its public libraries.

I occasionally see actual not-bot people here following thousands or *tens* of thousands of people and I keep wondering "how are those feeds even marginally coherent?" Like, at that point you're basically never going to see anything that wasn't added to the firehose in the last minute or two, no?

Well that doesn't suck, especially if they can stretch it out long enough to cover the wait-list time for a human donor and help people reduce or avoid dialysis in the process.

I know everyone's jumping to Mapquest for the recent pile of understandable reasons, but I wasn't prepared for something that included entirely-hallucinated AI-generated descriptions of things like bus stops.

No, Mapquest, that bus stop is not well-sheltered or in sight of local businesses or in a bustling neighborhood, it is a pole with a sign nailed to it on a side street of a side street where the most interesting event is the bus passing by once every thirty minutes (hourly on Sundays).

Finally reading this exposé about how the AHA has been using funds to hire a corporate lobbyist to quash its own members’ views. It’s entirely dystopian and I hope for the day when we have leadership that is actually responsive to the views of its membership. www.chronicle.com/article/a-sc...

chronicle.comOpinion | A Scholarly Association’s Secretive Washington PlaybookDid the American Historical Association ask a corporate lobbying firm for advice on how to silence its members?

Looking forward to another month or three of getting frustrated every time I see the phrase "become the 51st state" in the news. Gotta love journalists' - even most Canadian journalists'! -crippling fear of actually using the word "annexation."

[Ep3-Vader-esque wail of annoyed anguish at reddit sticking a hard login wall on the old actually-navigable-and-readable version of the site for some inane reason] Readily accessible information sources are for suckers, amirite? Sigh.

Sounds like we are in fact trying out "yield unconditionally and hope it works this time" once more on the trade talks. Guess now we'll see how the PM attempts to make people stop a widely popular boycott. Wonder if we're losing our own mineral rights too at this rate. We'll find out Friday!

Kind of enjoying how my latest glance at the Blender feed is a roughly even mix of people rhapsodizing about how much they love using it on the one hand, and pained howls of martyred despair at the suffering that is using it on the other. (Which to be fair is a big improvement over v2.x or v3.x..)

I wonder exactly how many people put their hands on this between the initial prompt and the handing out of the materials, because it's obvious that not a single one of them put their *eyes* on it at any point in the process. Only the greatest lessons for Kentucky's students!

Totally sure a private equity firm under the Trump administration will keep Canadians' best interests in mind after buying control of one third of our commerce, right? It would be nice if we could go, like, one single solitary week without someone ceding more sovereignty to the United States.

I started getting followed by some "film festivals" and "writing festivals" and thought "oh, these are cool!" Then I looked a little closer. They're all part of a network that preys on writers, charging us for reviews, and feeding our stuff into slop generators. So I made a list.👋🏻🖕🏻😠

A frankly insane story about how a Trump-linked American drilling company is setting up equipment in Greenland to make exploratory boreholes, *despite* being denied permission by the Greenlandic government. So much for sovereignty, I guess. www.theguardian.com/world/2026/a...

Just a thought, but what if we *didn't* simply capitulate unconditionally to every American demand on the assumption that this time - *this* time - the random tariff episodes will stop? Just wait it out until the wannabe mad king dies, it's not like *anything* we do will moderate his behaviour.

cbc.caCanada prepared to halt booze bans, meet other U.S. demands in exchange for tariff relief: sources | CBC NewsThe Canadian government is preparing to meet some U.S. demands — including ending bans on American alcohol sales — as trade talks heat up ahead of the latest tariff deadline, according to sources.

Fiddling with search engines to see how bad they've become by searching for Blender, and oof. Google: for some reason pushes a download link to a version from 2016 DDG: links the actual site, but also links numerous fake sites below that Bing: Actual site but also several genAI fake sites Sigh.

Kagi apparently likes the ten-years-out-of-date version too, as do some of the phishing sites the others feature in their results. Kinda curious what it is about that one version that the various engines are fixating on.

Canada *really* needs to tear up the Safe Third Country Agreement already. Applying the term "safe" to a country as fixated on persecution and refoulement as the United States is right now is an obscenity.
