Look at how the NSA protects this type of data. You don't let just anyone use it. It has to be someone with a high level security clearance, who is aware they will go to jail if they abuse that access.

John Oliver played a video of a Flock executive saying the system was OK to use as long as the police were trained and ethical in its use. Like Flock is not responsible if police use the system to stalk current and ex spouses or romantic partners.

A citizen activist has pointed out that "flock cameras each contain 2-3 pounds of copper wire and 1-2 ounces of gold. Do with that information what you will." Wise words.

Cops abusing their authority the second they have access to abusable power? Come on, that's the sort of shit that cops go to the academy for! Let's skip the part where "nobody could have predicted this," like we live in a country with police who aren't exclusively domestic abusers.

what has been surprising to learn is there are millions of these cameras installed & just not on street corners, private businesses have them too & there’s a whole line of interior cameras, if you watched John Oliver flock emps entertained themselves watching unsuspecting Chick-fil-a employees

I saw someone try to defend them saying that's not what they were MEANT for (which is BS anyway). Still. And? End user analysis is standard for any product. It's not hard to imagine this is what would happen. Of course they use it to stalk people and oppression. Read a damn book! #orwell

We need to keep an eye on AXON too bsky.app/profile/blue...

Blue_Riverrrr@blueriverrrr.bsky.social

Flock vs Axon Flock is funded by Silicon Valley's Marc Andreessen, Peter Thiel, and Sam Altman's firms Axon is funded by Wall Street and Private Equity firms Blackrock, Vanguard, and State Street Trump has invested $5 million in Axon Our President is financially invested in mass surveillance

Individual cops abusing the system is a distraction. The whole thing is an illegal, unregulated dragnet with local, state, and federal governments and corporations as customers, so all responsibility and FOIA requests for the surveillance machine they funded with our tax dollars can be avoided.

This needs to be addressed as the Church Committee addressed abuse by the CIA, NSA, FBI and IRS. The activity is the same, the players are different and in some ways more consequential.

Flock is about profits not protecting our rights. The only true solution is forcing them and their end users to abide by very strict rules or even total elimination if citizens refuse to be spied on.

Of course it is focused on face-saving. They don't actually give a shit about people's privacy, they simply want more money. And they know Cops love being able to spy on people w/out a warrant, especially women they stalk.

The thing everyone knew was going to happen, because it always does, happened. The people who knew it would happen, but wanted it to happen because they would personality benefit from it: "Oopsies."

It seems to me the nation is rolling out their own updates to flock cameras...with a hammer. This isn't just govt surveillance either, private businesses are putting these up. A local corporation put them up in their employee parking lots and no one seems to know why. It's too much.

Yeah… back in the late 80’s, my aunt tried to escape an abusive CPD officer. His pig brothers down in Saint Louis nabbed her and brought her back to him. Flock made it easier but the problem has always been there and won’t go away without accountability.

So we have found a few LE who should not be LE and that means the cameras are a bad idea? IMHO, getting cops out of traffic and into community service is a way better use of my tax $$

And we're at the point where we have to surveil ourselves 24/7 to prove otherwise. This scenario played out locally not too long ago, and just the other day with those ICE goons. We all need to wear bodycams I guess.

It’s not the first time in recent history. This is exactly what happens when civil servants of average intellectual ability get their hands on a hyper-capable toy. Combating terrorism and crime: 0, boredom and abuse: 100.

I think that Flock has flew the coup. Now the new abuse of power story - can you imagine these ICE fucks using the 'Comply' electric gloves to torture folks? Something that doesn't leave marks like fists, clubs, and bullets do. They can't even serve drinkable water. So wrong.

They're only doing something right now to fix their PR. This is a typical corpo move, expect them to roll the changes back silently. Flock isn't the only company that does this, Axon (the bodycam company) make ALPRs too, though Flock is the only company that has faced backlash as of now.

Funny how they change their tune after harming people. They jam through their "innovation", make the CEO very wealthy, then pretend to be concerned. I don't believe a word he says

So, Flock is being blamed for cops using this program to stalk their ex. This sounds like a law enforcement problem. Without Flock, they would have just abused their power and find some other way to do it. Hold the cops accountable.

It has already been abused, by cops, dozens of times nationwide. Maybe more. There are all sorts of examples and many arrests. It's not they "can" use these cameras for bad things like tracking their ex-wives, it's that THEY ARE using it for that.

And, it's not just that they are using it for nefarious purposes, it's that they ALWAYS WILL use it for nefarious purposes. There is absolutely no way for a system of mass surveillance to exist without it being exploited by bad people.

So the fact this became a big story sounds like there’s a sizeable number of the guy population who never moved on from their exes and would stalk them given half a chance. Feels like a new kind of weird I didn’t know existed, this and the dudes who think about Ancient Rome daily. 🤨

Only ex-romantic?...you would think they would be more worried about their current partners...yeh...dumb cops.../s Actually more like dumb lies...from a fake news outlet...try harder next time...

What happened to America? Police armed like the military, gangs of government backed racist militias rounding up every brown person they see, and cameras recording their every movement. Land of the what? I await the revolution.
