Yeah it's never going to go anywhere because you need a sympathetic protagonist and making someone in the story-as-written sympathetic immediately makes it banal.

I mean it's obviously hideously inappropriate to even try, but like ... what is the story here? It's just local gossip, honestly. The story is barely even entertaining--it's mostly exasperating.
