lmao what no concept artist takes *2 weeks* to sketch one basic figure also it's 100% on you for not writing an art brief anyway. you can't say "draw any girl idc" and then get mad that the artist drew a girl without any of the specific details you wanted and chose not to articulate...

Let's be honest here, that guy didn't "come back 2 weeks later" with work that didn't meet unstated elements of the brief. He had it done in half an hour and you just didn't check up on it for 2 weeks.

Bro, 2 weeks on a sketch? Ain't no way. I'm not a professional artist... but I can't even imagine my unbelievably slow-ass taking that long, man. This guy, huh

I feel like this explains to me a lot about Molyneux, if he thinks directing a project means just having everyone guess randomly until he likes something.

i will say, being super vague and then telling a talented person who tried their best with your vague direction that what they did was all wrong sounds EXTREMELY ON BRAND from what i have heard about working with peter

It sounds like he has the need to be the smartest person in the room, and that's such a big driver of corporate dysfunction

It's GOTTA be some kind of tumble-dry-ass 6 different bosses to answer to endless meeting constant revision hellscape that makes that happen but that might just be my dumbass outside read of "what's wrong with AAA game development" that has holes that I probably filled with anti-corporate biases

'cause if it's ANYTHING like my work for corporate clients which is quite a lot less subjective, I always spent more time in meetings alone, before redoing work for middlemen who won't use it, than actually doing the work that's needed.

I mean, the artists I've commissioned for stuff work pretty damn fast in my opinion but even my uninformed ass would never think it'd take 2 weeks for a single character sketch with some descriptions. That's, like... a day or two tops if you're busy with a bunch of other stuff.

Sounds like he is an 'ideas guy' in the derogatory sense When i have an idea for a game the VERY first thing i do is start making extensive notes about what will be tracked (data) & what will appear in the game & how it all can communicate with each other

I didn't know where this was going, and thought it was going to be about how a collaborator will ask you questions to pull the idea from you and help you solidify your vague mental image. How the magic of human collaboration is that it helps you discover things you wouldn't think of alone. But no.

I really have nothing to add to the discourse but I did meet Molyneux in person once and my only real takeaway was that he’s a lot shorter than I had imagined

I am pretty sure he means Mike McCarthy (not McArthur) who now has 30 years of Animation Career (I do mean those capitals) and was "Lead Concept Artist and Illustrator" with Fable. So, probably quite busy with all sorts of stuff that was more important than "generic wandering girl".

Mike, probably: O god, here goes Molyneux again with one of his crazy ideas. Big name, so I'll better entertain him. Alright back to actual work. *2 weeks later* O shjt, I promised Molyneux that sketch. Let me just sketch something in my coffee break.

also part of this whole process is "we're going to iterate on it, I like THIS part but maybe THIS part isn't what I had in mind" and the artist either tries something else or meets you in the middle how is that not fun for these guys?

If I'm not distracted by other work (programming mainly) and chores, I can turn out a basic sketch of one figure under one day. More experienced artists can turn out whole comic pages in one day.

issuing "do [incredibly vague thing without any purpose, but has to succeed at your weird little game of 'guess what's in my pocket' and not be your own input]" commands to any of your collaborators doesn't mean that creatives are too slow, it means you're bad at your job and good at wasting time.

I honestly don't know how Molyneux can even give this kind of interview. It's obvious he's got brain damage from huffing his own farts for decades

ime bosses who want to hire top talent just to ignore what they think about their own disciplines, scrub off their own styles and visions and inputs, and try to force them to act like compliant little artbots are one of the many factors rotting the industry prior to all the issues with AI anyway

I recently got let go from a place like this in tech, where upper management just rode roughshod over everything, and it was a total nightmare. The first week I was jobless, my blood pressure went from t2 hypertension to almost being *low*. I hope the next thing is more collaborative.

I think something about the human soul is that if you get a bunch of people in a room and tell them 'we are making disposable trash, nobody get any ideas!' somebody will inevitably try to make Art anyway. There are people who think that's a bug.

Also did he just not have more regular meetings with his creative team to review work? Are they just working to his schedule? Christ this guy has always been an unaware twit.

Once more, I contemplate twin wrist tattoos: 'Commerce' on my right - 'Art' on my left. May reduce that to '$' on my right and a crossed pen / brush on my left.
