What do you do when you’re a gun-loving leftist who doesn’t fit into mainstream American gun culture? That's a question @manishakrishnan.bsky.social set out to answer this summer when she attended a Brutality match, an inclusive firearms competition in Idaho.

Republican, Democrat, Green, Nazi, gay, straight, whatevs if you are such a dumbass you actually think in the US of A you need a firearm for your personal protection/ prevent authoritarianism (OMG what bullshit that is) you will get no sympathy from me when you AD the weapon into your dick.

Brutality matches are hosted by Karl Kasarda, who runs InRange TV, a YouTube channel that embraces the idea of the Second Amendment being for everybody, but especially minorities. Trans and queer people made up about a quarter of participants. 🔗 www.wired.com/story/the-ha...

Then in September, Charlie Kirk was shot and killed and the nature of the story @manishakrishnan.bsky.social was writing completely changed. Despite the fact that the suspect in Kirk's shooting, Tyler Robinson, is not trans, trans communities got a lot of blame from the right-wing rage machine.

The 2nd Amendment is a firearms regulation amendment. In America it is constitutional to regulate private ownership of firearms. In America it is constitutional to ban private ownership of all automatic and semi-automatic firearms. Freedom and safety for everyone.

Per federal law, male individuals between the ages of 17 and 45 who are not members of the US Military (or coast guard) are members of the unorganized (but regulated) militia. (Many states have expanded the age range and genders which make up this militia.)

“The RIGHT OF THE PEOPLE (all persons in good legal standing) to keep and bear arms (private ownership) shall not be infringed.” This has been litigated and relitigated finding that private ownership of arms is constitutionally protected, and no amount of semantic tricks change this reality.

Why are you guys promoting an extremist youtube channel promoting guns for all? The vast majority of leftists support background checks and other common sense restrictions on gun ownership. Framing it as a safety issue for minorities doesn't make NRA talking points any more valid, knock it off.😑

Couldn't find anyone sane on the left that supports unlimited gun rights, so you went and found a small group of extreme leftists in Idaho? Makes sense.🙃 The rest of us will continue to oppose gun culture and gun manufacturers and stand with Sandy Hook and Columbine survivors.

Tough concept...progressive, leftist ideology can make for possibly more responsible and compassionate gun owners and users...but it still fuels the weapons industrial complex, promotes capitalist goals through massive sales and maintains automatic firearms and assault rifles in the wrong hands

I understand the hesitation but being realistic if there's not already half a billion guns in private possession in the United States there will be by 2030 and no confiscation program will succeed since people won't die to take them. Reducing the amount of firearms is a multi-generational project.

I really do understand the ethical concerns but the flipside is allowing the increasingly polarized and bloodthirsty right-wing to believe that they have a monopoly on violence and the right to exert that violence on groups they view as their enemy.

I have no delusion about any kind of armed revolution but I do think that an idea of community defense against vigilante violence in the wake of an uncaring or incapable government (post-Katrina, for example) is something that we shouldn't overlook.
