When it comes to people I’ve never met dying, the deaths of the original #StarTrek cast members have always hit me hardest. Starting in 1999 with DeForrest Kelly, and still today with Walter Koenig. Their work had more positive impact on who I am than any other influence besides my grandfather.

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

The Society of Authors has withdrawn from the ill-conceived concession to the dark side that was the "ethical GenAI" charter because of the mass and vocal outrage of authors. Publishers need to be made afraid of this level of anger too.

By introducing me to #StarTrek at a young age, my father vaccinated me against inheriting his racism. I don’t think he ever really understood Star Trek. But I did.

Wow, I wrote this one a long, long time ago – it's a rant about people going to see old movies so that they can watch them "ironically" and laugh

Done! Witnessing the evolution of @buzzarddoomfolk.bsky.social's sound so far has been quite an experience. What has stayed the same, however, is the righteous anger at *everything* going on in the world. Fantastic sound, great lyrics. The perfect music for the worst time! Highest recommendation!

#NowPlaying Next up is the new album by @buzzarddoomfolk.bsky.social and it's another one I've been waiting for. Going in totally blind (or deaf) as I've avoided any singles released beforehand. Going in! buzzarddoomfolk.bandcamp.com/album/hush-now

I hadn’t thought about these in 40 years! What a rush of memories!

I will never stop shouting about this. We got a cease and desist letter when I lived in the dorm requiring us to delete Napster. Immediately. Scared the ever living hell out of a bunch of 19 year olds. Anthropic steals every art that has ever been made? *crickets*

Still trying to understand how Napster got shut down, but Anthropic is going public and still hasn’t paid us authors yet after stealing our work.

I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement. For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation. I will not be silenced.

The radio is playing that one song that immediately transports my whole mind back to high school. That’s going to influence my thought patterns for the rest of the day. Is that good or bad? I don’t know yet.

Remembering my dear friend John Prine, on what would have been his 80th birthday this Saturday. I miss him deeply, as all of us who love him do. What a gift he will always be.

Sam Altman said people are just gonna have to die in order to implement AI. In the very same week, Anthropic claimed it’s a human rights violation to be mean to the computer. These people need to be held accountable. They think lines of code are a person with rights but living people are debris.

The Verge@theverge.com

Over the past year, Anthropic has repeatedly flirted with the idea that its AI models could be conscious in some way. In February, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said on a podcast, “We don’t know if the models are conscious.”

I’m not sure how to define this thing I’m writing on guitar. It’s not jazz. I’m not good enough to really play jazz. But it’s definitely inspired by my love of jazz, and, specifically, the day almost 30 years ago when I first discovered the music of John Coltrane.

Still working on this and still feeling really good about it.

I think I’m about to write the best piece of music I’ve ever found in myself and my instruments. It’s running through my head and making me nervous.
