Three years ago, my dad said that all fish are the same shape. Out of spite, I decided to draw all 478 families of bony fish listed in Nelson 2016. There's still some stuff I need to edit and some fish I want to redraw but, after 985 days, I finished my big dumb fish project last night.

If you make HTTPS requests or have other TLS clients and care about MITM attacks, you need to update today. If you run Go: go get go@1.27.3 If you run Homebrew: brew update brew install ca-certificates If you run Linux, maybe stay off the internet for now.

🚨 Six WebPKI Intermediate CAs are compromised. This is bigger than Heartbleed, but a client-side issue. Anything that verifies certificates against public roots, like most TLS clients, is/was affected. Details, live test, patched versions and workarounds at emudhra.we-have-a-problem.com Act now.

shitposts aside, this one is serious, my loves: if you’re just waking up and you have any service online running PHP 5.4 to latest, you need to take it down RIGHT NOW and don’t put it back online until after it’s patched absolutely catastrophic vulnerability dropped in the middle of the night

"When idealism runs out, spite will keep you going until your wellspring of idealism can refill itself" is one of those things people don't appreciate enough, IMO

Every time I get a Pixel update trying to force me to use Gemini, the features I actually care about get slower or stop working entirely. My phone now takes over 3 seconds to start taking a screenshot. If I take and edit a photo rn, I can't access it in other apps. It usually ends up duplicated too

I'm a long-time GoogleFi customer. I've had a Pixel phone for at least 10 years. This one's only 2.5 years old. I've weathered some truly awful bugs - I couldn't send texts with attachments for years. None of that felt as bad as this deliberate enshittification.

When they first added Gemini to Photos, I had to delete every photo stored locally on my phone to get the camera and Photos to work again. This update, they took away the "Web Search" option for selected text. Apps that were running fine now freeze and crash. *Gmail* just froze up during a search 🤦

It’s an unpalatable truth, but Meta, TikTok, and hopefully it goes without saying, X, aren’t sustainable to rely on for political amplification, cultural promotion/marketing or community organizing. It’s long past time for new platforms/means and to move on.

I am kinda blown away that folks are talking up these stunts so much as opposed to all the rather excellent opensource alternatives that are quickly growing to match or exceed their paid competition, just as those paid options move more to SaaS models, like Krita, GIMP, Blender, Godot, Kdenlive, etc

You may be shocked by Jo's experiences. I'm not. For me, it's just another Tuesday. Big thanks to Jo for giving this talk and sharing it at her own risk, when she shouldn't have to.

I gave a talk at EMF titled "Men in Tech #YesAllMen", in which I told my experience of being a woman in tech. I was afraid to publish it in case it affected my current or future employment. With all the current news I would like to add my 2¢. So here is the recording: youtu.be/WXL6K1lhvt0?...

Recently, I've gotten a few questions about how to get more speaking opportunities, so I started writing a blog. It's not finished because I basically started typing out the risk calculations I have to do at every conference - like bringing a door alarm for my hotel room.

3 years ago, if you had asked me to read a piece of fan fiction I wrote while demoing complex git topics based on audience questions, not a script, I probably would have punched you. But today I did just that, and did it really well. I'm extremely proud of myself.

Finally: AI usage. Referencing people wanting more accessible sites over apps, a lot of LLM work seems to be geared toward both addressing the bad alternative descriptions we write, and helping to traverse barriers and friction. Still thinking through this one, but glad it was collected and shared.

People use screen readers on their phone, another thing I wish more people knew. WebAIM's comment on the correlation between proficiency and mobile OS is also worth noting. Cheap phones run Android, and disabled people are more likely to live in poverty. webaim.org/projects/scr...

Browsing with JavaScript enabled remains an overwhelming majority. I'm including it here so you can tell a supposed accessibility "expert" that they can pound sand if they parrot the antiquated myth that it needs to work without JavaScript to be accessible. webaim.org/projects/scr...

If you're on a desktop or laptop, it's going to be Windows. This is incredibly important in that JAWS and NVDA have different modes of operation compared to VoiceOver. Most people only test on macOS out of convenience, but it is not reflective of majority experience. webaim.org/projects/scr...

I'm glad they capture disability types. It's a great reminder that screen reader use is not exclusively for fully blind individuals, and also not exclusively for vision-related disabilities. I wish more people knew this. webaim.org/projects/scr...

People who insist it is a superpower are disregarding the very real distress it causes us. Unless you are wealthy and buffered enough to not *need* to function day to day, it can be debilitating and incredibly stressful. Does it also give us unique perspectives and connections? Yes, AND

ADHD is disabling & esp so for us who can't take meds. On this, there's something a bit upsetting when people insist it's a superpower *just* because they are impressed by the output. Do they see us as a machine or a chatbot which has value because of the nature of the output? Feels dehumanising.

The history of software is one of feminising and devaluing women's labour as nerdy, clerical, following specifications and requirements determined by men, and then valorising a presumed male hacker figure who disrupts and manfully disregards the needs of those relying on custodial maintenance work.

When I was 18, I got an ethics certification so I could conduct research on humans. The research? Teaching other college students how to build stuff in Second Life so we could study if VR improved learning outcomes.

When I was in library school, we all had to make a Second Life account; because it was The Future! The only person I ever met/ talked to during my mandatory time using the game was someone in a different library class doing the same thing.

Not shockingly, I have been playing the viral Dressmaker game. I was shocked to find a description of hypermobile Ehlers Danlos Syndrome in a video game article. hEDS tea lovers unite! This game is literally made for us!
