"Perhaps the bleakest factoid is that the US is even less popular as a tourist destination than Nazi Germany in the 1930s." This is a really big deal on so many levels. It's also so damn depressing. Trump really does ruin everything.

New in PN: Who wants to visit an authoritarian America? "Data shows the US on its way to being as unpopular a tourist destination as Russia, & for roughly the same reasons. In both countries, a tourist who runs afoul of the govt might spend months in a freezing warehouse without no legal counsel."

Half-baked thought: The PR review has always been overloaded and a little painful. It’s under extra strain as people are pumping out code with AI. It got me thinking, if this was never the ideal review process, what would be? What would I want to review and when?

AI or no AI that would be useful. It’s just that with AI people might be motivated enough to do this since simple text is the most convenient input for AI.

Bringing it back to the PR: Instead of just having code to review, you have an audit log of all the reasoning and rationale for the project that you could review and question at any stage.

Can I get some text files that capture this stuff? Can they all be in the same place? I don’t want to dig up the “2025 Q4 planning” unannotated PowerPoint in a random OneDrive folder.

It’s important for everyone working at any level of a project to understand why a project is being done. Where did it come from? How does it fit with the company’s overall goals? What alternatives were considered?

- And overall, prove that you’ve thought about what problem you’re solving, the value, the purpose etc. (I understand the process of creating these is not completely linear, btw). It’s like a “chain of consideration.”

Pulling the thread: - Before coding, prove that you’ve thought about the design - Before technical design, prove that you’ve thought about the requirements, AC, test criteria, architecture - Before you flesh out requirements, prove that you’ve thought about the UX and how to solve the problem

Given that only I can do this (and let me just add that it's dangerous to let anyone else attempt this), it's unfortunate that only I will be accumulating all this wealth. But that's the price of carrying the world's burden and being tasked with bringing utopia to all of us.

An electric ice-cream maker was listed at just $17.99 at Amazon and Best Buy. Then it became unavailable at Best Buy, and more than tripled in price to $59.99 at Amazon. Here’s how it happened… 🧵

Twice a year, Hawai'i experiences a strange moment where the sun appears to be exactly overhead & anything that is completely vertical casts no shadow. Let's learn about Lāhainā Noon, subsolar points & 'Kau ka lā i ka lolo', meaning "the sun rests on the brains."

Someone dies in ICE detention every 6 days! That is horrific! Double that number, and that's someone dying every 3 days. Double it again. One human life every 1.5 days. Double it again. One life every 18 hours. Double it again. More than 2 lives a day. Now it matches pretrial detention deaths.

Dems' "Project 2029" first major policy proposal: an online child safety plan — narrowing Sec. 230, banning social media for kids under 16, promoting phone-free childhoods and more. Already backed by Cory Booker, Mikie Sherrill, Randi Weingarten + Jonathan Haidt. LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

A Black teenager was accused of stealing a backpack and ended up dying by suicide because he was kept in solitary confinement at Rikers for years. His name is Kalief Browder. He spent over 700 days in solitary confinement AWAITING TRIAL. I guess in racist America that’s worse than this.

CW: transphobia. See, this is why it can be painful to know too much history.🫤 This post implies that what is happening in Kansas is *similar* to what the nazis did. But it's not just similar. It's *identical*. In 1933, nazis revoked trans people's documents. Before 1938. Paragraph 175 and 183.

In 1938, the German Reich invalidated all German Jewish passports. They must surrender them, after which their ID will mark them as a Jew. In 2026, the state of Kansas invalidated all correct trans drivers licenses. They must surrender them, after which their ID will mark them as trans.

Given the timing, we consider this to be targeted harassment as punishment for exercising our First Amendment rights. We're still handing out free whistles. And we just got in hundreds of new yard signs. Keep resisting, Minnesota. We love you.

🤷🏿‍♂️Um... It already is a daily occurrence? There were only 6 days in 2025 that US cops *didn't* shoot a person to death. These shootings mostly happen at traffic stops. Again, some things that happen to Black people every single day, only become seen as horrific when they happen to non-Black people

Just Jack@just-jack-1.bsky.social

After Columbine I thought we would move heaven and earth to prevent mass shootings. We did nothing and now they are almost a daily occurrence. Today we watched an ICE thug brutally murder an American citizen in cold blood. A young mother. If we do nothing this too will become a daily occurrence.

You are up to date.
