I dug into EIA data and found a growing divide between electricity prices at investor-owned utilities and public power providers. Then @michellema.bsky.social and I visited two towns that show what that divide means for customers on the ground. Read our story here! www.bloomberg.com/graphics/202...

If you have a gun in your home, you're tripling your background chance of suicide. If you've got teens, you're raising theirs even more. Each step to make access a little harder - storing it in a locked case, unloaded, separate from ammunition, which you store locked - radically reduces it.

We got our hands on internal ICE records that show how widespread use of force, like punches, kicks, takedown maneuvers, restraint holds, and less-lethal weapons such as Tasers and pepper spray in detention centers has grown wapo.st/4tdgBRA (1/)

Also obscuring the data is how after Trump's inauguration day, we can see the narrative reports shrinking from an average of seven sentences to three. From more than 130 words on average to 40. The narratives have become less detailed. Who knows what's being left out, what's not being reported.

We had enough data to compare Biden's final year and Trump's first year of his second term. Detention staff used force 37% more times on 54% more detainees, according to our analysis. Of course, detainee population has also grown-- estimates of 45 percent. The delta isn't huge but consider that...

The Post’s analysis is likely an undercount of use-of-force incidents. There were serious enough Use of Force incidents reported by the Post and other news orgs in the past that did not exist in the data. And at least 140 facilities do not appear in the reports.

Emily is the best sports data journalist working right now, and I have no doubt she will continue to do incredible things in whichever newsroom is lucky enough to hire her. I’ll deeply miss getting to work with such an amazing colleague (and fellow FPL fan!!!)

You can also use the map in the story to look up vaccination rates in your local schools! This was a HUGE data lift: we reviewed and mapped tens of thousands of individual schools’ data, assembling the most comprehensive public database. And we published this data here: github.com/washingtonpo...
