Five years later, I’m excited to say that I’ve realized Wisconsin and I are committed to each other. Today, I was officially told that starting this fall, I will be tenured and promoted to associate professor at UW-Eau Claire!

SCOOP: 'Tommy' from the now-viral exchange with Abdul El-Sayed is Thomas Teepell, a former staffer for Republican Senator Josh Hawley with close ties to Christian Nationalist Sean Feucht. He's the son of a former Bobby Jindal staffer whose consultant work was instrumental in getting Hawley elected.

It must be a requirement of all higher ed admins to be the type of person who treats everything faculty do with suspcion. Just once in my career I’d like to have a conversation with a campus leader who doesn’t approach every new effort with hostility or like they’re trying to investigate a crime.

He said this at the time, as did many, and it remains a bald-faced lie. Not a matter of opinion. It's just completely untrue as an objective factual matter. Civil marriage laws don't work like that and never have. Just like the legality of divorce and remarriage doesn't affect the Catholic Church.

As someone who was a high school senior 25 years ago and has had my entire adult life defined by post-9/11 bullshit, I’m not *at all* looking forward to the endless, performative hot takes tomorrow.

I’m sorry, what fresh hell is this?

I know that AI-apocalypticism is the flip side of AI-utopianism, the two sides united in thinking this is the most important tech in the world of utterly transformative importance. And I know that a lot of us on here are allergic to both sides of that, me very much included. 1

In no real sense is the academy, especially the elite academy, "radical." Sure, there are radicals here. But it hews close to its longstanding function as a machine of class reproduction. The supposedly radical elite academy churns out finance & tech bros (of all genders), lobbyists, nice doctors.

New from me: what would a grand coalition for government reform look like post-Trump? It should include both people who care about democratic backsliding and state capacity. But right now these groups aren’t really talking to one another. 🧵 donmoynihan.substack.com/p/what-could...

“I have to be blunt here: Our critics are really fucking stupid, and we’ve given them way too much leeway to conjure senile fantasies out of their own illiteracy. We need to stop taking their trolling in good faith, and we need to stop apologizing for our work.” This is exquisite on The Discourse.

The problem has never been the picture or picture taking. The problem has always been that Very Smart People spend all of their time trying to convince the public that the picture is a reliable way to decide where to park, when that is not the case.

i don't really think WI-GOV was a polling miss so much as a huge amount of late movement. i'm sure there are things to fix on the polling side too, but like, if I take a picture of my street, and then a week later there are a bunch of new cars parked there, that's not the picture's fault.

More of this sassiness.

Quick, everyone go scrub your old tweets about what a <1% win in a contested Democratic primary for Michigan Senate means for The Whole State Of Things, they're likely to contradict your new tweets about that from Wisconsin Governor.

Sorry to the Kalshi bros.

Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley has won Wisconsin’s Democratic primary for governor, narrowly defeating state Rep. Francesca Hong after a race that stretched into early Wednesday. Crowley’s victory caps a remarkable comeback.

The AP has declared Rebecca Cooke the winner of Wisconsin’s 3rd Congressional District Democratic primary. Cooke, the 2024 Democratic nominee who lost to Republican U.S. Rep. Derrick Van Orden by less than 3 percentage points, defeated former Eau Claire City Council President Emily Berge.

I’ll go a step further: maybe the political science profession should rethink its obsession with the quant veneer of certainty in the first place since, you know, the last ~20 years worth of data science has been about as accurate as a theorist with vibes.* * I say that as a theorist with vibes.

Maybe we should stop with the primary polls until we know what's going on

I’m not saying “Death to all quants.” I’m just saying that in the last several decades a lot of people have breathed their own farts so heavily that they are shocked that reality does always match their regression. Some intellectual humility and pedagogic diversity would be nice.
