If your stance is that for-profit newsrooms should provide access to important stories for free and only paywall trivia and trash, the inevitable result of that is a news media that prioritizes trivia and trash in hopes of staying afloat.

I spend a lot of time watching smart people get mad that new organizations don't provide important public service stories for free AND that news orgs prioritize clickbait/trash over important public service stories, and I can't emphasize how at odds these two desires are.

It brings me no joy to announce this, given his politics, but it's Yukio Mishima.

People has named Sexiest Man Alive, so it’s time for vintage nerds to name their Sexiest Man Dead! In past contests, Toshiro Mifune and Paul Newman have taken top honors. Who are your picks?

On the more uplifting side, there is simply no one alive today with the swag of Denver's favorite son, Silas Soule, the man mogging in the center after breaking a fellow abolitionist out of jail in 1859.

Black widows don't actually need that much space, and Jolene has been living happily in a 1-pint mason jar since I collected her this summer. We're upsizing half because I'd like to see her make a bigger web and half because I really need her to stop webbing herself to the lid.

Jolene has also been getting a little spicy over the past week–standing her ground when I try to move her, threatening the forceps, etc–which makes me think she may be getting ready to lay again. bsky.app/profile/adnr...

Jolene, harlot that she is, has laid an egg sac out of wedlock.

I wrote a long ode to spiders for Outside around October 2022, and mentioned the earlier study that found evidence for REM-like sleep in spiders. Four years later it's still one of the things I'm proudest of having written.

🕷️💤 New paper in time for 🎃! Do #spiders really sleep? In our new study on #Portia fimbriata we tested all behavioural criteria of #sleep and found evidence for regulated, two-stage sleep with recurring REM-like stages. Out in @pnas.org! @roesslerdaniela.bsky.social 📄 tinyurl.com/3fky8ze7 🧵1/9

I doubt it's really possible to prove that spiders dream—without being able to ask them, it might not be a falsifiable hypothesis—but REM sleep is when humans dream. If spiders experience something akin to REM, that does raise interesting questions.

Went bouldering and found about a dozen brand-new stickers from a white nationalist group pasted on signs and an electrical pylon. Looked pricey!

I'm not making predictions for the future, but Quebec's last referendum on seceding failed by 1%—about 50% better than Alberta's did—and 31 years later, they're, notably, still part of Canada.

This is a great story, and also a great excuse to talk about one of my special interests: Carparachne aureoflava, better known as the wheel spider.

A lot of people are what I'd call spider-blind. Spiders are pretty much all the same to them—nuisances or background noise. The wheel spider is a great example of how much they're missing by writing off one of the most common kinds of animals in our daily lives.

Spiders are wildly varied: They capture prey in giant communal webs, balloon on silk threads, and spring out of trapdoor-equipped burrows like eight-legged Hungry Hungry Hippos. If you ignore how they fit into their environment, there's a whole segment of your world you'll just never see.

Which brings us back to the wheel spider. The wheel spider lives in the Namib Desert, a harsh place for an arthropod to make a living. But it has advantages: If a wasp tries to turn one into a living nursery for its babies, the wheel spider will tuck in its legs and cartwheel down the nearest dune.

Wheel spiders aren't the only kind of spider that does gymnastics when faced with a threat. Cebrennus rechenbergi, another huntsman also known as the Moroccan flick-flack spider, will do a series of handsprings to get away from danger. (🎥: sci-news.com/Funke)

Adult Pompilids don't actually eat spiders—they feed on nectar. Instead, females use spiders for their young, seeking out out a spider, paralyzing it with their sting, and dragging it into a burrow. The wasp lays her eggs in the spider before shutting it in, Cask of Amontillado-style.

When the larvae hatch, they eat their way out of the still-living spider, leaving its vital organs for last. It's a gruesome enough fate that Darwin cited a similar caterpillar-preying wasp family, the Ichneumonidae, in a letter to explain why he didn't believe God guided evolution.

However, wheel spiders don't roll to help them catch prey. As with the dwarf reed snakes @sabs.bsky.social writes about, rolling appears to be a defensive behavior. In the spiders' case, it helps them escape from a very scary threat: pompilid wasps.

Commonly known as spider wasps, Pompilidae are a family of parasitic wasps that prey on—you guessed it—spiders. Some of the best-known members of the family are the tarantula hawks, giant wasps from the tribe Pepsini that prey on tarantulas and have a legendarily painful sting. (📸 Charles J. Sharp)

Wheel spiders are a kind of huntsman, the same family that those enormous Australian spiders you see online belong to. Unlike them, though, it's very small, 2 cm max. (📸 Daniel S. Katz)

Like their Aussie cousins, wheel spiders are active hunters—instead of making capture webs, they stalk their prey, sneaking up as close as they can before striking. Huntsmen in general are the fastest spiders on earth, with some species reaching 8 mph.

The central conceit of internet regulation is that a platform's decisions like whether to suspend an account are NOT editorial decisions.

A year or so ago, an all-black stray* cat appeared in our yard. My wife called her Salem; my son, who was just learning about anime, misheard and renamed her. This is all to say that she's back and all the neighbors are listening to me try to convince Sailor Moon to come over and let me pet her.

*not actually a stray, turned out to be our neighbor's outdoor cat who figured out my wife was a sucker and would give her extra dinner if she showed up on our doorstep and meowed.

Jolene, harlot that she is, has laid an egg sac out of wedlock.

I do feel a little bad for stealing her babies, but the alternative of having 400 black widows escaping into my garage was a little much even for me.

Western black widows are a native (and common) species around here, so I'll likely return it to a sheltered spot near where I caught her and let the new generation try their luck.
