Russia's military recruitment machine still produces enough men, but it is messy, decentralized and difficult to control. If Putin decides to launch another round of mobilization, it may be because "privatized coercion" is getting out of hand. janiskluge.substack.com/p/the-perils...

Russia still recruits around 1,000 men per day, according to the latest data from September. Under pressure to fulfil their quotas, Russian regions are very inventive. They try whatever works and copy what works elsewhere. The trend this year is payments to intermediaries.

A very good long read on the intensified Russian campaign targeting Ukrainian railway logistics - same objective but different means within and outside Ukraine’s borders, from @defence24pl.bsky.social:

It seems that Sweden is sending Patriots to Poland to secure NATO logistics to Ukraine. Why not just send them to Ukraine directly…

Yes the AD situation remains bad until the end of the year, it seems. France has pledged a package but it’s due to arrive in early 2027. I’m hoping for Sweden to have a look at its Patriot inventory but no one really has enough to make a difference, given that the US pew pew pewed so much on Iran…

Yes since 2025 European involvement in Ukraine’s defence effort has both deepened and widened. Trump’s return to the White House was a watershed moment. European countries now host Ukrainian production and logistics to the extent that Russia has started to consider Europe as Ukraine’s ”rear”.

adamhall.bsky.social@adamhall.bsky.social

@alanderminna.bsky.social has there actually been a step up this year in material support for Ukraine this year? Like it seems that russia has become so brazen this last year and bellicose in both method and rhetoric yet struggling to see what Eur is doing differently

”Poland, therefore, has to protect the railway network, disrupt recruitment before an operative reaches the target, and improve intelligence exchange with Ukraine. Otherwise, even an unsuccessful act of sabotage can still achieve one of Moscow’s objectives.”

”Different tools are used, but essentially the same objective is pursued—to disrupt Ukraine’s connectivity with Europe and increase the costs of supporting Kyiv. This is why attacks on Ukrainian railways and Russian sabotage operations in Poland should not be analysed separately.”

The UK-EU relationship is like a bad rom-com. The UK broke up with the EU. The EU was shocked and sad about it. But soon realized there was a lot about the UK that was annoying (opt outs, hostility to federalism, America’s poodle) and they moved on. 1/2

Now the UK realizes the break up was a total disaster and has decided it wants to get back together. But the EU is in just a very different place. It has moved on. The decision to get back together isn’t with the UK. It’s with the EU. To get back together the UK has to do something to win it back.
