Research thrives on innovation and the diversity of ideas, yet our funding system often penalizes both. In our new study published in PNAS, we explore the hidden costs of competition in allocating scarce research funds. (1/10) www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...
Did you know that postdoctoral fellow Bo Schuman runs a YouTube channel on #logic, its #philosophy & its history? His videos cover a wide range of topics, helping students find their feet in the subject and, with luck, getting even the experts to think differently: 📺 www.youtube.com/@LogicwithBo...
This interview with Michael Behrent on the 100-year anniversary of Michel Foucault is really great. If you ever wanted to know what the “death of man” really meant, this is your chance!

A key part of academic success is financial support
It's amazing how much variation there is in terms of funding across countries.
The average PhD student in Denmark makes more than a new Assistant Professor/Lecturer in the UK!

There’s still a little over a week left to submit your abstract for the interdisciplinary minisymposium we’re organizing in December. Please help us spread the word & reach anyone who might be interested!

As common-sensical as this might seem on the surface, I think it's mistaken and I am sad that research l/ship does not seem able/willing to question it

Urban birds in Europe are more afraid of women than of men—male experimenters can get 1m closer to the birds before they fly off than women.
And we don’t know why, or even how they can tell the difference:
buff.ly/zVt8n4O why.
“At least they didn’t use AI” when somebody writes something stupid quickly turning into one of the top backhanded compliments, right there with “you look great for your age” and “great effort, honestly”
"Over decades, [Ariely] keeps ending up on journal articles that don’t replicate & turn out, through absolutely no fault of his own, to be based on dubious or fake data. Bad collaborators, lazy research assistants, missing computer files."
I am shocked, shocked to learn that this 2002 paper by Dan Ariely is based on dubious data and doesn’t replicate.

"Dat komt vooral door de hoge energieprijs en een sterk gestegen vraag naar stroom uit België."
De fossielvrije stroom die in ons land verdween door de kernuitstap wordt vervangen door Nederlandse kolenstroom.
And journals should enforce their own rules. If a paper in my journal states data available on request, and as editor I decide that the request is indeed reasonable bc there are severe issues raised and such data could help investigate this, they must be made available.
Thx for persisting, Vincent
"Park et al. stated the raw rewired curves to be available upon request in their original peer review file, never supplied them despite repeated requests, and now attack the reconstruction this made necessary. This is unheard of." WTF?
In 2023, @nature.com published 'Papers and patents are becoming less disruptive over time', receiving world-wide media attention. Our Matters Arising, published after a 32 month delay (more on that soon), shows that the reported decline can largely be attributed to dataset artefacts. 🧵

Glad this is FINALLY published by Nature. It took them a while to let science be self-correcting. Luckily, in the meantime, nobody cited or used the flawed paper.
It was quite an adventure to be part of this research!
Our findings are published today by Nature: rdcu.be/fzwzq

Many people lament Scientific American becoming politicized and woke.
But it’s the worsening editorial standards that made it into a platform for pseudoscience.
James Smoliga shares a sadly all too typical example:

I p-hacked my early work on prejudice. It never felt like cheating. I now wonder if that's because I believed the cause was good. New essay on why scholar-activism is a dangerous turn for social psychology. If justice comes first, truth is what gets sacrificed.

New paper out now 🥳 When psychologists discuss generalisability, they often refer to vague notions of representativeness. We provide an accessible intro to the total survey error framework as a tool to reason about this more rigorously.

Fun fact: About 20 years ago, the SNCF (French railways) travel agency ran a campaign to make people aware that you could book foreign holidays with them, not just train tickets. They mocked up several overseas destinations as if they were French towns or villages.
🚨 Exclusive: The White House made a direct call to FIFA to ask Gianni Infantino to review Folarin Balogun’s red card.
FIFA approached for comment and referred to the findings of its independent committee.
