GOOD life lessons learned from gamedev: - Savagely hacking down scope is the fastest and most effective way to make an awesome product - Limitations make you do your job better - A button or seam in the right place is all you need to turn a character from garbage to fuckable

Life lessons from gamedev: - Your opinion doesn't matter - Nobody cares if you want to make a good product - Defining a process/workflow makes you an enemy - Job descriptions are for team players - Fidelity trumps quality - Well-designed clothing on characters is superfluous

If you're mad about this (AND YOU SHOULD BE) - I know indies can't be expected to save the game industry. But goddammit some help would be great. Go to Steam or wherever - find a game (NOT MADE WITH ANY AI) that you think is fun and unique - TELL EVERYONE ABOUT IT. Boost signals!

"dont worry, we didn't use LLMs for real art, like writing, or graphics, or sound, we only used it for dumb gross useless basic shit like programming" always the funnest thing to read as a programmer, as someone whose whole career is based on code, whose handwritten library changed the industry etc

No joke. I think this is the most important video I have ever seen about mobile games. This guy breaks down how this game psychologically profiles you, and makes the game harder or easier in order to show you ads

I'm on 5.6 but this is true even in 5.8. How was this supposed to work? I'm curious if anyone's messed with Gameplay Cameras that has run into this before. It's doing some fancy things with namespaces and evaluator declarations in C++ but it's not THAT complicated. Am I missing something??

Earlier versions of the game did acknowledge the creators of the original games at the start of each section, and I consider it unacceptable that this was removed at Jon’s direction. Stephen Totilo noticed this change and wrote a nuanced article here: www.gamefile.news/p/a-complica...

Politics-free games don’t exist. We’ve always been open about where we stand, and Young Suns is no different. You can help a queer- and trans-run studio make this industry a better place for everyone by wishlisting Young Suns on Steam store.steampowered.com/app/4149610/...

this is about tv but we are absolutely losing out on good games because dev cycles take 5+ years & there’s so little time given to experiment, so you get a bunch of stuff that rehashes what money people think works & no one on the team has the space to compare 4 different ways theyve done a feature

1/3 of the game industry has lost their job in the last two years. Ubisoft closed two more studios today. Everyone is out of work. To that end I'm starting a new bundle to benefit a layoffs hardship fund. Game devs: please consider submitting your PAID games to the bundle, which will launch in July.

people (myself included) have always talked about how there will be a time when a certain unreal version becomes the new canon "last good version" that an extraordinary amount of developers lock themselves to, supported by the license agreement. the time is coming really fucking soon.

If anyone is looking to hire a Peabody and BAFTA winning senior writer, I am looking for work. I’ve got six years experience in games. Everything from indie to AAA. I am not married to staying in games. I am hoping to relocate to the Bay Area. I am keeping my ears to the ground.

Naughty Dog only makes trailers when A) it is the right tactical time to start the hype train for their next title and B) they benefit on working on the trailer as an excuse to flesh out a particularly ambitious segment of gameplay (usually a huge set piece) that they needed to do anyway

Naughty Dog has, for decades, been PlayStation's golden goose, producing technical wonders while delivering incredible narratives. But after this year's State of Play, it has become clear how absent they've become. So why has Naughty Dog been benched? https://t.co/rAyRoIMLQU #IGNSummerOfGaming

let me add too that we were ostensibly closed because our major was "unsustainable," but the state's - and university's - own metrics showed that our enrollment has been growing consistently since 2012 this wasn't about money and it wasn't about metrics. it was about something else.

little formulation I've been rolling over: for a class of games that want you to slowly steep in their narrative waters, gameplay functions as a kind of fidget toy. And this isn't incidental; some corners of the affect space that narrative as a whole maps out are only unlocked by fidgeting

“Designers nowadays are more worried about pleasing influencers than gamers” No, let’s not misrepresent the past. Back then as now, we have always had to think about how our game is marketed. We designed around set pieces and how well features showed/demoed. Influencers are just the new marketing.
