given how infrequently I’ve published in recent years, let me be a bit selfish and indulgent as I share “Free Speech and Anti-Democratic Violence” – plus a thread elaborating its arc and aims. (both the article and the thread are LONG – sorry!!!) scholarlycommons.law.wlu.edu/crsj/vol31/i...

scholarlycommons.law.wlu.eduFree Speech and Anti-Democratic ViolenceThe resurgence of far-right extremist groups—like “sovereign” militias, white supremacists, and avowedly fascist gangs—has exposed the First Amendment’s vulnerabilities to the “leaderless resistance” ...

I was once at a university-wide diversity training where, to an auditorium full of people, the facilitator said "can anyone shout out an example of a stereotype?" The entire audience was silent until one man shouted out "All women believe in ghosts." I think about that a lot.

if you ever want an hours-long exegesis on the history of the adjacent Virginia Beach Town Center, as a lens for understanding the absolutely unhinged urban planning and development history of the Hampton Roads region—a big if!!—please do lmk. I could not be more serious about this offer.

Next up on Posting Through It, we’re back with another installment in our acclaimed “Who the Hell?” longform biographical series. Our next subject: Richard Hanania. Feat guests @letsgomathias.bsky.social and @henryburke.bsky.social Out Monday!

god, this whole episode was so funny and so horrifying and heartbreaking (extremely complimentary, I promise!!)

This post is unavailable.

but really, TGS entered my usual rotation in recent months, and every new episode I’m, like, “oh, this is it, this is the new favorite,” and then it just happens over and over, and I’m still fully delighted each time. 🙂

(*as an added bonus I am also haphazardly going through the archives and am currently getting really excited to learn why Richard I was trash 😌)

I find this much more insidious than say, copilot! university enterprise AI is often just wasteful (our copilot is worse than some of the cheapest frontier lab models on a consumer subscription) but decisionmaking like this is an assault on shared governance and democracy

We’re back with our second story about how Trump’s purge of the FBI killed a sweeping bribery probe in D.C. This time, we take you to South Carolina, where two powerful politicians escaped scrutiny: Sen. Lindsey Graham and Rep. James Clyburn. THREAD 👇

This isn't what I intended my membership dues to be used for . . . The whole story is so incredible, the behavior described so egregiously authoritarian, that it really has to be read in full. 🗃️

In this explosive follow up to the story about the American Historical Association's use of DC lobbyists to silence AHA member Palestine advocacy, we have this: AHA is conducting a witchhunt of its Council. Loyalty oaths. Lawyers. Threats. Authoritarian behavior. www.chronicle.com/article/the-...

there is something so profoundly undignified and off-putting about this even before one gets into the Adam Bonica Analysis Of It All 🫩

Do we do GoFundMes here? Anyhow, better than the AOIR listserv. The municipal rec soccer club I volunteer with is raising money for a tent. Fees in kid's sports are getting out of hand, but rec leagues are a shining spot of access and affordability. Help us out? www.gofundme.com/f/supporting...

not trying to Discourse but just popping in while on a ten-minute break—smack dab in the middle of teaching the Second Amendment today—and seeing the latest news is just really crushing. wish I had anything insightful or inspiring or informative to say here or to my class, but I simply don’t. zilch.

(my students remain wonderful, just to circle back and emphasize that in my haggard, blurry-eyed state, after the fact/after finishing the longest day of this semester...so far. I’ll take it.)

Grateful to @lpeblog.bsky.social for the opportunity to reflect on Pistor's work and to express my very Marxist doubts about legal institutionalism.

having previously been assured this new Registration System Hub Thing (*pricey application built into the university’s existing websites) will be hugely convenient for us, the nine (9) emails I have had about registration for my last semester here (which isn’t for 3 weeks) have me…a bit skeptical!!

i love when subscription services send me those coy emails like ‘the price of your subscription is changing.’ yeah? it’s changing? in what way? what sort of personal growth will this already expensive subscription undergo?
