6th explainer from the RSS’s climate change task force.

Royal Statistical Society @royalstatsoc.bsky.social

As heatwaves sweep across Europe, climate change is once again front and centre. But 10 years after the Paris Agreement, what do the numbers say? Both the modest improvements and significant challenges show the importance of stats in understanding climate progress. Read the latest CCTF explainer👇

Latest explainer from our @royalstatsoc.bsky.social climate change task force. This explainer led by @andrewcparnell.bsky.social and Hamish Steptoe. @adrianraftery.bsky.social @dariodomi.bsky.social

Read our new explainer on how AI is being used in weather forecasting—what it’s good at, where it struggles, and why statistical thinking is essential to keeping the balance between AI and physics-based models 🌈 Part of our mission to demystify climate data and concepts.

Teaching economics or social sciences? Concepts like the unemployment rate or labor force participation can be tricky to explain clearly. Our new Work & Employment page breaks these down with clear explanations and visualizations — all free to download and use in your classes and presentations.

Our World in Data@ourworldindata.org

Being unemployed isn’t the same as not having a job — at least when it comes to labor statistics. The map shows unemployment rates around the world in 2025. Let’s see what this number captures — and what it doesn’t 🧵

Short days they may be, this time of year, but you get to see some lovely sun rises when walking the dog. Sun not quite up in Oxwich, Gower with the Bristol Channel in the distance.

Back from Liverpool visiting Mum. Found this from the Kevin Keegan Fan Club. Must have been early 1972 based on the games referenced. Football very different then, although arguably Keegan was one of the first superstars. Fan club had just 200 members at this point. Signed by Kevin himself.

Some of the best data detective work I’ve seen, and embarrassing for @bmj.com

Health Nerd@gidmk.bsky.social

This is one of the most remarkable academic debacles I've ever seen. A large RCT got published in BMJ. There are currently 44 Pubpeer comments, mostly about the data, including...well. Read for yourself. pubpeer.com/publications...

Well worth a read. Accessible writing on, and analysis of, climate change targets and carbon intensity from @adrianraftery.bsky.social - a member of our @royalstatsoc.bsky.social Climate Change Task Force.

Did you know turbulence is getting worse because of climate change? Jet streams, shifting weather and atmospheric changes are making flights bumpier. Where are the hotspots, and what's driving the change? 👉 Read our blog to find out: www.metoffice.gov.uk/blog/2025/tu...

This is a vulnerability map for 8 key bodies: ONS, OBR, Food Standards Agency, MHRA, Met Office, UKRI, Natural England, & UKHSA. ONS has the most independence. All but ONS have ministerially appointed leadership. 3 could be abolished with no oversight as they have no statutory basis. 6/11

In a UN speech today, President Trump said that "all of these [climate] predictions were wrong". Back in 2019 I led a research effort to digitize old climate model projections and assess how well they did. Turns out they got future warming pretty spot on!

The Northern Pacific Ocean is currently smashing temperature records. And it is reaching these levels far earlier than the current generation of climate models had expected. A short thread 🧵

Revisions not uncommon and all national statistical agencies are facing these challenges. Labour Force Survey in the UK is one problematic area that has had recent visibility. The US issue could be due to late surveys from small firms also.

What remains clear is the national agencies need to be well funded as governments depend on a sound underling data infrastructure. If only some of the AI spare cash was directed to ensuring the core data infrastructure was sound and future proof.

Clearly some text has not aged well. Issues tend to be associated with countries where the data don’t fit the government’s narrative. That being said, employment data have historically come from surveys, not administrative data, and those surveys have become problematic with low response rates.
