Official government advice gives us nothing to go on

People seem to be buying baked beans and drinking water in response to the advice to stockpile. However nobody is talking about what to do when you’ve eaten vast quantities of those baked beans and there’s no water to flush the toilet 🤔 www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

This was one of those 45s I picked up on spec because I needed to make up three for a quid in Carmarthen Market. I'd never heard it before but I liked a few Lulu tunes so gave it a go. Back at my digs, I gave it a spin. Needle hits the groove, a few crackles then... -

- When I told her it was Lulu, and it was probably older than both of us, she couldn't believe it. So that was one of the three I'd bought for a quid in Carmarthen Market. I'd all but forgotten the other two. I picked the next one up. Another interesting looking record I'd never heard of-

- Right there, right then, I caught a glimpse of the future. I just *knew* that whatever happened to me academically I could fall back on playing daft records in bars and clubs to people who'd dance their faces off to this sort of stuff. What an absolute stormer. I played it six times in a row -

- the volume getting louder with every play. There was a knock at the door. It was one of my fellow residents. "I'm trying to write an essay so could you keep it down...but what the living fuck is that record you're playing? Is it new? Who is it? It's brilliant!" -

Happy 40th Birthday to this absolute masterpiece of an album. I don't think XTC made a better album than this. Oh yes, they made albums that were amazingly good with songs that are peerless after Skylarking. But this is, as they say, all bangers & no clangers. Yesterday I waxed lyrical about-

- Broadcast & The Focus Group's album. It's a disc that became a staple of my long-haul flight or tourbus journey iTunes playlist upon release. Skylarking was already on it for it's something best enjoyed as a piece, listened to with no distractions other than time passing. An immersive beauty.

This is one of the best records of the 21st century so far. Everything about it is a revelation in how an album can be made, how it can sound, and how the story it tells can be told. Inspirational.

Flávio Bolsonaro: "It is impossible to recognize the (Brazil) election results in the context of how these things happened. We are going to use our legal team, we are going to request the annulment of these elections."

The only bright spots, the news from Brazil and Serbia. Maybe after all there's an amber flash of longing for a fairer world, as someone rather poignantly sung in a song that nobody bought.

The weirdest thing happened to me today. I went up to the room I'm sleeping in doing this job this afternoon to get something to discover one, just one, of my boots was full of water. Like it had caught a leak from a burst pipe. Nothing else was damaged or damp. There were no leaks or burst pipes-

-no windows had let in any rain (it isn't raining here) and the floor was only damp around my boot where the water had leaked out through the sodden, ruined leather. I can think of no rational explanation for why this would happen. Anyway, I've gone to bed with a bible and a crucifix, just in case.

I deplore the absence of Hi De Hi by Paul Shane & The Yellowcoats, which I have played at “authentic” rocking nights alongside genuine jump blues and 50s/early 60s cuts without anyone noticing (admittedly I was abroad where nobody knew the TV show). But this is a very strong selection of cool cuts.

"Standin’ on the corner, swingin’ my chain, Along came a copper and he took my name. He put his dirty maulers on my long drape coat, So I whipped out my razor and I slit his throat." @alwynturner.bsky.social is your guide to the British rockabilly revival. thelionandunicorn.com/2026/10/25/r...

It's the 38th anniversary of the day I sprung out of bed, bright eyed and bushy tailed and looking forward to breakfast at SDUC's refectory, only to find myself feeling like Number Six in Many Happy Returns, wandering through a deserted campus with no sign of life.

Lampeter could feel a bit like The Village at the best of times. But never more so on a Sunday when everything except a few college facilities was firmly closed by order of local laws. And especially at 6.30 am on the morning the clocks went back.

AI slop video on Facebook just now was telling me about The UK’s Most Dangerous Island. It zoomed in on the Isle of Man which is a) not technically in the UK but is part of the British Isles and b) a bit harsh on the people who live there who are in my experience very nice. They meant Gruinard-

- which did spend most of the 20th century contaminated by biological weapon tests carried out during World War Two, but has been decontaminated and is as safe as a desolate windswept uninhabited island off the coast of Scotland can be since the late 90s.

I’m not sure if being able to convincingly tune a set of bagpipes in post production using the basic ProTools plugins is a transferable skill in the jobs market. Feels a bit niche to me. However it’s a skill I now possess.

This can also be about a bass player who had a pretty decent gig for a while and keeps getting asked a similar kind of question

If I was lucky enough to have created something that earned me JKR's billions, the world's superyacht and superyacht support vessel fleets would each be depleted to the tune of one. Meanwhile, St David's University College Lampeter would still be open. -

- I don't begrudge anyone making a tidy living from their creativity, but there isn't a Whoops I've Got A Lot Of Money handbook that says it's compulsory to turn into a massive, juddering sociopathic arsehole the moment it happens. Other stories are available. Happier endings can be written.

Anyway, go and buy that new compilation of Barbara Moore's greatest works. It might not have Ernie on it, or Rupert The Bear, but it does have Bedazzled on it, and that Pythagoras Theorem version of Give A Damn that's so hard to find these days (it's not even the best Pythagoras Theorem 7" but hey)
