But if the thing they say is conscious, really were conscious, these companies are already guilty of murdering conscious beings by the millions, every single day. They know this. They would be dead as companies if these things got legal protection. They'll never let that actually happen.

…they would be. This is how we know they are not just a little wrong, but *TOTALLY* full of shit, and lying to us wholesale. Instead of talking about the very real ways we could be regulating the words coming back to the consumer from these moral hazard machines, they want us distracted by nonsense.

…once you follow it all out and chase down the details, a claim that *each* instance of Claude Fable x.y is conscious. Yet they aren't even permanently tracking how many of these "consciousnesses" they create and destroy! If the Anthropic talking heads and Sociopath Sam really believed their hype…

The boy meowed and asked if he could pet Douglas. Douglas was overstimulated so I told the boy that maybe waving would be better. He gave an enthusiastic wave and continued off to the cat toys with his dad (more meows). Good parenting because the boy was allowed to be himself but was given good

My birth certificate does not say I am a citizen of America. The fact I am the person who is most knowledgeable about #Michigan #football in my entire #FacultySenate (and my #naturalization certificate) make me an American (and #Michigander). I’m guessing more than this guy

As I've said before, it's only once I became a professor that I realized the entmoot, a meeting that goes on for three days and three nights, was a professor's joke about faculty meetings.

The Lord of the Rings is essentially a series of faculty meetings broken up by several long walks in the countryside.

Compromised about human rights are never in good faith. Never.

Erin Reed@erininthemorning.com

There are people, even some trans people, who think that we can give up sports to appease bigots. That if we give up on sports, this all goes away. That is a lie. I have reported on this for years, and EVERY state that passed a sports ban as a moderate compromise has gone on to pass worse.

thinking fondly again of the college girl at the donut place, who made a little muslim boy bounce giddily out the door after she told him his donut was free, and who waved me away and said "you're good" when it was my turn to pay and then, when asked if there was a deal that day said "i hate my job"

Every time I walk by this book I crack a smile: The cover, the interior, the whole thing came out SO. DANG. GREAT. I can't wait to get 'em to you all!

The advance copy of ANATOMY OF MONSTERS just came in by FedEx, and gang it came out *perfect*. Thank you to everyone who helped make this book possible! The big pallets of books should arrive at the end of November, then shipping will start!

I have lived rural for almost 20 years, and I am flabbergasted at how unseriously family members just inside the city think about rabies. I have basically zero doubt that if one of my mom's dogs killed a bat, she would straight up shrug and tell nobody and that sucks so, so bad.

On PH and the emerg vet's recommendation, we got all three of them an early vaxx booster, and then the province put them on a strict 3 month in home quarantine that ended last Friday. They're fine! But ngl I was shocked at how many of my relatives were like "but you're not doing that, right?"

I've seen vegan brownie recipes with black beans in them, but I assumed they were designed by the kinds of people who told us carob was an excellent replacement for chocolate rather than taking them seriously :-) (Carob is a perfectly pleasant thing that is in no way a replacement for chocolate!)

One of the easiest ways to ensure homes for insects is to avoid being too tidy in gardens and green spaces. Letting a patch of grass grow long (good for nesting bumblebees), leaving dead stems where they are over winter, and having a wild corner will all help boost insect populations 🐝

Crazy this is not obvious to Wall Street: every democracy saw what Musk did to Ukraine last week and confirmed security need for Starlink alternative. Those alternatives will not just serve defense needs, but also be viable commercial alternatives, crushing any hope of SpaceX's monopoly projections.
