Imagining the private schools administrators being yelled at because the school’s parents portal don’t include a MCP thingie, which means their customers can’t efficiently manage their children with their AI

i need you to understand this: the closest thing a rich person gets to talking to their child is answering emails from their school from cradle to grave, their child is managed by aupairs, nannys, boarding schools, and eventually a pa, they then have kids, and sometimes keep the same nanny too

the thing about modern software engineering is that it is so solipsist by nature, "working together" is so against the grain that we have special terminology for it, "pairing" so i guess i shouldn't be surprised when we rediscover the hard way that team work is about communication

One of my favorite bits is when a company gets so confused about something that they mint a C-level title to address it, and it's clear that only someone with a terrifying combination of ambition and lack of self-awareness would ever take it

Still thinking about a comment a read in response to "fast, cheap, or good, pick two" that responded with, "I never expected companies to pick fast twice."

Found a way to explain something I was doing for a while but could never pin: in some orgs, all things being equal or mostly equal, taking architectural decisions that makes a system more legible to non expert people like project managers can save a lots of time

There’s a new intern in the infrastructure security team and it’s again a cloud of floating eyeballs. I mean they do good work but some variety would be nice times to times.

When someone says « this code tastes like drywall », a tech lead is a person you don’t retort to with « how do you know how drywall taste like? » because the look in their eyes makes you feel like they definitely know how it tastes.

English software security people mostly can’t work without enough gin while the French ones require some céleri rémoulade, I wonder if some other countries have similar food requirements

I wonder if LinkedIn will make a partnership with a gambling site, Microsoft could even use it to spearhead a gambling business. You could gamble on when someone get or loose a job, when they get a promotion… endless opportunities.

a political compass with “llms are useful” / “llms are useless” on one axis and “coding is largely solved” / “we don’t know how to program” on the other

Discovered that military people tried to standardize the language used to give orders, and of course it involved XML. You can search for« Battle Management Language », just be sure you’re ready for it.

ANTHROPIC: Our son loves humanity and for the low price of trillions and trillions of dollars will usher in an era of unprecedented peace and prosperity! OPENAI: Our horrible oafish son is hacking web sites without our permission. ANTHROPIC: (eyes narrowing) Our son is also evil

If you see mention of the horrifying French law that bans minor from social network: the thing is mostly a feel good law without any defined way to enforce it and no punishment if not applied I don’t mean it’s not a bad thing, my point is to avoid criticizing it for wrong reasons

I have gone very far into the weeds in investigating every (I think) published mechanism for preventing authentication tokens from being stolen and how basically none of them has actually succeeded in a useful way: www.codon.org.uk/~mjg59/blog/...

codon.org.ukPreventing token theftWhen you log into a service you’re given an authentication token. Each further request to the site includes that token, allowing the server to figure out who you are and ensuring that you have access ...

Much like the famous picture of where surviving planes had received bullet damage, it took some thought about what was happening to realize how effective they were. After helmets were introduced, head injuries increased. The story is well known but here's an actual source archive.org/details/inte...

I assigned random gender/ethnicity labels to scientific abstracts from the literature and then asked Claude to do a thematic analysis. Claude identified a clinical versus computational split for female/male authors and a DEI focus for Black/URM authors. All in completely random data.

Asking for help: I’m used to buy tough phone cases from society 6 because they are nice and really solid but we bought an iPhone 16 e and they don’t sell cases for this models, anybody know a good enough alternative? 🙏

with all the deskilling and gell-manning (etc) we're gonna get from automated thinking machines, now is the time for the 'tools for thought' crowd to make tools that help you think things through for yourself. tools to do *more* hard thinking. it should feel effortful. cherish that feeling.

heard a guy say "you have to access it through the portal" and i was momentarily struck by how sad it is that what he said is so boring :( "accessing it via the portal" should be wonderful. we deserve that at least. it should be cool to access it via the portal and instead it sucks shit

Pro tip: if your job use a tool that measure vulnerabilities by scanning dependencies versions against a list of known bad versions, vendoring a dependency without updating it will reduce the number of reported vulnerabilities
