What’s `b` after this runs? let a = 10; let b = a; a = 0; It’s 10. Even though I had gotten it right, I couldn’t have explained why. @danabra.mov and @maggieappleton.com’s course, Just JavaScript, helped me develop a better mental model of how it works and now it's free. justjavascript.com/learn

We'll quickly regret defunding and losing those who read the specs, learn, explore, measure, weigh, and share their hard-won experience. When the answer to every question is "I asked Claude and clicked approve" we yield actual answers to probabilities and will always be left asking, "Are you sure?"

I was going to do a short post on Modern Web Guidance; it turned into a huge deep dive. Here's what it does, why it raised eyebrows, and on-point information with truth bombs. I tried to be complete and honest. It's not magic, but in time, it might just make the web a little bit better.

So many career/life skills boil down to seeing things from someone else’s pov and focusing on value for THEM, not YOUR needs. The only variable is who you’re empathizing with (friends, customers, biz partners, etc). Perhaps Empathy is as fundamental as Math and should really be taught at school?

I never understood why Safari dropped support for theme-color. Doing something automagic to create a seamless edge-to-edge experience seems fine, but that should be a fallback in case there is no theme-color. That way we can move on from hacks like grooovinger.com/notes/2026-0... to set the color.

Just watched @nerdy.dev's CSS Day talk on Contextualism. Excellent as usual. Adam shared a mega list of things a component could and should respond to. He was so mad that most of our components (including his own) do almost none of it. conffab.com/presentation... css-day-2026.netlify.app

Today I learned, through Sara Soueidan’s course, Practical Accessibility, that spectacles/eyeglasses are a form of assistive technology. I’ve worn glasses for most of my life, but I’ve never really thought of myself as someone who uses assistive technology. practical-accessibility.today

practical-accessibility.todayThe Practical Accessibility CourseA get-right-down-to-it online course for Web designers and developers who want to start creating more accessible Web user interfaces and digital products today

It made me realize how easily we can think of assistive technology as something that exists for “people with disabilities,” rather than something many of us may rely on ourselves.

Custom Properties. Variables is what people wanted. Custom Properties is how they were implemented in CSS. Because they are properties, they are a core part of the language: they cascade, go through the value processing steps, etc. — so much more powerful than just "variables".

I’ve put hours into learning CSS over the years and continue to do so happily. Building with HTML and CSS is the part of the work I enjoy the most.

Just finished the first module. The part about order of operations was the standout for me. I have tried and failed more than once to get my head around the declared to actual value stages. But coming at it from the lens of value processing steps finally clicked for me.
